REVIEW | Midnight in Paris (2011)

The all-American Gil (Owen Wilson), with his California-surfer looks, is enamored with romantic Paris, especially Paris in the rain, just as his fiancĂ© Inez (Rachel McAdams) is enamored with the pseudo-intellectual Paul. The young, and completely opposite, engaged couple tags along to the French capital with Inez’s parents for a business trip. And while the highly romantic Gil professes excitement and desire to move to Paris after their wedding, daydreaming about Paris in the ‘20s, reliving the time of great writers and artists, the annoyed Inez is frustrated with his penchant for the past and his romanticism.

Written and directed by Woody Allen, and nominated for this year’s Oscar Best Picture, Midnight in Paris is a delightful fantasy-romantic-comedy that will transport you right into the heart of Paris for an unexpected adventure. Because whenever the clock strikes midnight in Paris, magic happens to Gil that even you, the viewer, wouldn’t want to see ending. And I’m not gonna spoil what Gil finds every midnight in one Parisian corner. It’s like Cinderella’s magic night with the prince happening not just one night, but every night.

With worthy performances from the delightful cast that includes Kathy Bates, Carla Bruni, and Adrian Brody, Midnight in Paris is a delicious fantasy right from the beginning until the end. Like fine wine, you’ll be savoring it down to the last satisfying drop. It’s an escape, a different kind of adventure.

Midnight in Paris is the best Woody Allen film ever: inspired, playful, daring, and imaginative, and probably one of the best films of the decade. A charming fantasy that elicits riotous laughter, the dialogue engaging and stimulating, the characters rich, and the story magical.

For artists and fans of literary and creative geniuses, the movie will be a fantasy fulfilled. Do not dare read any more details of the movie or regret coming across spoilers. Watch the movie now, be swept away, be surprised, fall in love, and experience Midnight in Paris.
