As if you don't already know, Joss Wheddon is currently the superhero of the world for making the dream of the entire Marvel fandom come true, not only bringing to life their all-time favorite superheroes on the big screen but also TEAMING them up to avenge the world. What could be more exciting than that for fanboys and girls? It is the most highly anticipated summer blockbuster crossover event in recent cinematic history!
In The Avengers, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) of S.H.I.E.L.D brings together Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), together with Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) to save the world from the evil plans of the highly insecure exiled demigod and half-brother of Thor, Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Tension and quarrels rise between the superheroes...but can they unite, compromise, and tolerate each other for the sake of humanity?
From the POV of a girl with no comic-book superhero obsession but is fairly familiar with the characters, The Avengers indeed felt like a comic book come to life on the big screen. It's light and all POWs and KAPOWs and colorful. The superheroes, especially when pitted against each other, their individual personalities shining, are fun and cute to watch, inducing chuckles and sometimes even bursts of LOLs. However, due to the understandably simple good-versus-evil plot and the extremely light treatment, the movie did not entirely engage me. Also, with the superheroes being invincible, of course, the action scenes did not provide me with any real sense of tension, danger, and excitement, and even made me restless and bored in most parts (okay, here comes the wrath of the fanboys). Wait! The actors, though, gave perfect justice to the beloved comic-book superheroes, and you couldn't ask for a better cast.
The witty banter and the dynamics between the superheroes, the good-looking actors, the smooth, direct-to-the point sequence of events and the occasional beautifully choreographed fight scenes make The Avengers not a bad movie to me. No, not at all. Just not my cup of tea. Just not my brand of action and adventure. But it's funny, yeah, and I like Captain America, and! the visual effects are impeccable! But I did not experience any thrill, but I don't hate it either and...I...er...better cut this movie review short lest I get attacked like this female reviewer.
