REVIEW | 2 Guns (2013)

2 Guns may be your generic buddy cop film, but since it's got A-listers Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg in it, the result is a highly engaging action-comedy thriller.

Undercover agents Stig (Whalberg) and Bobby (Washington) try to bust a Mexican drug cartel by robbing a bank and stealing the kingpin's money. Unbeknownst to each other, both have their own secret agendas, following orders from their own superiors. But when the bank robbery results in an unexpected surprise, Stig and Bobby find themselves in an intricate web of deception and betrayal.

Based on Steve Grant's popular graphic novel series, and directed by Icelandic Baltasar Kormákur, 2 Guns delivers a decent screenplay that hooks and entertains throughout the entire running time. The dynamics between Washington and Wahlberg, both highly competent actors, makes the film more enjoyable. Their incessant bickering, competition, and jibes at each other, masking their undeniable affection and friendship towards each other, induce frequent laughter.

The thriller and action are also competent, with Bill Paxton delivering a surprisingly impressive performance as a sick and ruthless CIA agent.

2 Guns is a fun, entertaining, and unpretentious buddy cop action-comedy that reminds us why we go to the movies in the first place.
