REVIEW | Horror Stories 2 (2013)

If you're a fan of light horror movies, the kind that would make you jump, yelp, and spill your popcorn, laughing afterward, or you're a tween on your first date, Horror Stories 2 would be your ideal movie.

The Korean anthology film tells four horror stories that are quite nostalgic; reminiscent of your grade- or high school days indulging in the thrill of horror stories circulating in school.

"The Cliff" is a serious drama about betrayal; "The Pain of Death" about a road trip gone wrong; and "Escape," a comedy-horror about entering another realm. And the three stories are told by an eccentric employee (Lee Se-Young) of an insurance company so her boss (Park Sung-Won) can dig answers from fraudulent and mysterious insurance cases this being the fourth horror story.

The film is well-acted albeit campy, with crude special effects. However, because of the simple and effective storytelling and scare tactics, the movie is fun and engaging in its entirety. Of the four, the comedic "Escape" is the most enjoyable, with lead actor Ko Gyung-Pyo delivering an effortless performance. At the press screening, the movie house erupted into frequent laughter and squeals in this episode.

Horror Stories 2 is an engaging, light, and unpretentious horror flick that elicits jumps, guffaws, and screams. An added bonus for you if you tend to swoon over cute Korean guys— this, based on the audible heart-sighs from the female attendees at the screening. Fun and de-stressing without the threat of sleepless nights.
