REVIEW | The LEGO Movie (2014)

Welcome to the LEGO universe, the land of interlocking bricks and yellow citizens. The building blocks that cultivated our childhood creative expression.

Our hero is Emmet, a generic, by-the-book Lego man who resides in a controlled LEGOLAND, where the citizens are prohibited to think outside of a manual. The land's ruler, President Business (Will Ferrell), obsessively makes sure that nothing—and no one—strays off the set bricks, and even cloaks his authoritarian ruling with a catchy anthem "Everything is Awesome!" so the brainwashed citizens do not suspect that something is wrong.

Emmet, with his nondescript face and zero personality (and therefore zero friends), gets oftentimes lonely, but a prophesy just might change his destiny. Together with a gang of "MasterBuilders," including the mystic Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman), WyldStyle (Elizabeth Banks) and her boyfriend Batman (Will Arnett), Emmet embarks on a comedic adventure...and unwittingly becomes the key in thwarting President Business's evil plans.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' Phil Lord and Christopher Miller take to the 3D screen the timeless construction toys in The LEGO Movie, with the charming use of old-fashioned stop-motion animation. The action is non-stop—as well as the jokes. The humor is light and precise; no bursting-at-the-seams laughter here, only enough to generate an appreciative and sincere chuckle. The filmmakers, though, clearly had a riot mashing up LEGO trademarked characters that will surely tickle fanboys and girls alike.

The LEGO Movie is cute, delivering a competent and adequately entertaining action-comedy, which will take you on a sweet, nostalgic trip back to your childhood LEGO playtime years.
