REVIEW | Your Sister's Sister (2011)

Iris (Emily Blunt) encourages her messed-up, mourning best friend Jack (Mark Duplass) to travel to her dad's idyllic little cottage in a small, secluded, picturesque Pacific Northwest island and get some "alone time." Jack does just that— but finds Iris's sister Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt) already occupying the cabin.

An unexpected little incident happens between Jack and Hannah and it becomes problematic when Iris herself appears on the doorstop the following day. Three's a crowd? Not exactly, because they get along quite fine— except that they all have complicated secrets that could break them.

Lynn Shelton's little low-budget indie flick offers a funny, poignant tale of love and relationships. It's a dialogue-driven story, gently peeling off layers of its characters as it goes along, surprising you with its little emotional twists and turns.

The words may not be that impressively witty but they flow naturally and conversationally, and the emotionally expressive story will touch and engage you. It's competently acted and Emily Blunt simply shines here as the sweet, vulnerable best friend and sister. Your Sister's Sister, a 2012 Sundance film, is an enjoyable, unconventional, and soulful romantic-comedy.
