REVIEW | Gone Girl (2014)

Overly groomed, beautiful, Type A, perfectionist Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) suddenly disappears one morning in their Missouri home and her husband Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) is the prime suspect. As Detective Rhonda Boney (Kim Dickens) digs through the case, resenting the indifferent Nick Dunne, the mystery of the gone girl unravels into unexpected twists that puts a whole new meaning to “marital problems.”

Luckily, Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel is expertly handled by David Fincher, whose sophisticated treatment downplays the source material's cheap and disturbing plot (read my last year’s book review) and turns it into a sick, twisted semi-elegant thriller.

Rosamund Pike is the shining diamond in the film here, absolutely a more engaging and riveting Amy than the character in the book. I wouldn't be surprised if she gets an Oscar nod. Neil Patrick Harris as Amy's rich ex Desi Collings also delivers haunting, effective performance.

As someone who deeply hated the novel, Gone Girl passed my personal tomatometer.
