REVIEW | The Theory of Everything (2014)

When Stephen Hawking (Academy-Award winner Eddie Redmayne) met Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones) in 1960's Cambridge, he explained that he's studying cosmology, "the marriage of space and time." However, this is not a film about black holes and relativity theory, but Stephen and Jane's special love story.

The Theory of Everything explores true love in the midst of  insurmountable challenges. At the heartbreaking age of 21, Stephen is diagnosed with a motor neuron disease, with a life expectancy of two years. And so we witness Stephen's physical deterioration, with Jane by his side, while his great mind continues to flourish.

The arrival of choirmaster Jonathan Hellyer Jones (Charlie Cox) into the couple's life, however, brings another layer of emotional conflict, which will all the more hook you into the drama.

Based on Jane Hawking's memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, the film is simply all about renowned astrophysicist Stephen and his love, Jane (who have opposing beliefs), brilliantly portrayed by Redmayne (Les Misérables) and Jones (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). You forget that Redmayne is merely an actor, as you become transfixed by the emotions and sharp intellect behind his increasing disability, all the while being moved by Jane's selflessness and love.

The Theory of Everything, directed by James Marsh, is an emotionally absorbing love story, thanks to the richly developed characters with Oscar-worthy performances by the lead actors, particularly by Redmayne.

The film paints a beautiful backdrop of the concept of space and time, science and faith, but effectively speaks one language that we all know: love.

Good review Stephanie. Nice to see Redmayne and Jones do well in these performances, but the movie backing them up just isn't all that great.
