REVIEW | The Intern (2015)

Six years after the boring It's Complicated, Nancy Meyers returns to give us not a romantic comedy, but a sweet connection between Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway), a 30-something very hands-on owner of an online fashion business, and her 70-year-old intern, Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro). Ostin has her reservations about her too-observant intern, but circumstances bring the two together in an unlikely friendship.

The delight and humor of this feel-good movie is how an old gentleman makes his way through the hipster generation. The light, conventional story flows smoothly, with the occasional guffaw triggers. The story also refreshingly bolsters compassion and kindness and advocates acceptance of female power. Meyers both regards and affectionately mocks Millenials, with a somewhat sad reminiscing of the good ol' days.

Although The Intern is somewhat forgettable, it has enough substance and charm to be both enjoyable and tender.
