REVIEW | Kapatiran (2015)

A collection of beautifully shot shaky footage, Kapatiran comes off as a pseudo-film. An interesting montage of Pepe Diokno's seemingly accumulated videos with the theme of law, lawlessness and, of course, brotherhood (kapatiran).
It feels like he originally had ideas for a fraternity hazing story, and unable to finish it, he decided to throw in a bunch of his relevant (and not so relevant) personal videos into the mix, including the recent Iglesia Ni Cristo EDSA rally, for more of the "kapatiran" vibe.
This is not your traditional narrative nor your experimental film. Although his raw shots evoke a sense of disgust, despair, curiosity, and even fear, Kapatiran is not really a film; it's just trying to come off as one.
