REVIEW | ‘The Kissing Booth’ is horrifically sexist

“The Kissing Booth” is so offensive that you feel like suing it for sexual harassment. In the age of the #MeToo movement, this original Netflix coming-of-age film perplexingly portrays its 15-year-old heroine as a sex object.

Written and directed by Vince Marcello, the teen “romantic-comedy” (there’s nothing romantic or funny in this movie), centers on a late-bloomer, Elle (Joey King), who is lusting after her male best friend’s older brother, the off-limits Noah (Jacob Elordi).

One day, Elle, because of a wardrobe malfunction, decides to wear a micro-skirt to school, because she has no other choice (really?). Upon arriving at her school, she gets sexually harassed. A male schoolmate grabs her bum, and not only does the guy easily gets away with it (no expulsion, or at least a suspension), but Elle shockingly accepts a date with him as soon as he asked.

Meanwhile, sexist remarks are flying everywhere in this movie, with males, including Noah, the love interest himself, keeps talking about Elle’s boobs and body parts. Meanwhile, her best friend Lee (Joel Courtney), in the “dramatic” climax, never really thinks of Elle as a friend, you realize, but an object that he owns since he was a baby.

Elle, with zero self-respect, comes up with the idea of a kissing booth so she and Lee can get kissed by their crushes and get paid for it. She gets drunk, engages in intercourse, and further degrades not just the female population, but humanity as well, by her horrific actions and self-view.

Based on Beth Reekles’ self-published YA novel, “The Kissing Booth” is a horror of a movie that should have been banned instead of streamed online. Not only is the script witless and unbearably shallow, but it also promotes everything wrong in a society. Way to go, Netlfix, for feeding pubescent viewers with repulsive values (#sarcasm).
