CAMERON DIAZ DEVOURS IN THE CRIME THRILLER “THE COUNSELOR”

Image
Renowned filmmaker Ridley Scott whose genre-defying films such as “Gladiator,” “Black Hawk Down,” “Alien” and “American Gangster” takes the crime-thriller genre a notch higher in his latest movie “The Counselor.”

“The Counselor” brings together a dream cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt. The characters co-exist in the dark, tough and merciless world of drug cartel where a lawyer known only as the Counselor (Fassbender) is lured into the excitement, danger and easy-money of drug-trafficking, but finds that his momentary decision leads him on a downward spiral of unstoppable events and fatal consequences. The Counselor finds himself way out of his depth when an unplanned series of events lead to tragic consequences for both him and his fiancée, Laura (Penélope Cruz). Cruz’s real-life husband, Javier Bardem plays Reiner, a larger-than-life nightclub owner who brings The Counselor into the shady deal.

REVIEWS | CAPTAIN PHILLIPS (2013) versus A HIJACKING (2013)

Image
In 2009, if you recall in the news, Somali pirates hijacked the merchant ship MV Maersk Alabama off the coast of Somalia. The pirates took the ship's American captain, Richard Phillips, hostage. Captain Phillips survived and wrote a memoir about his ordeal. This year, two critically acclaimed films were internationally released: the Danish A Hijacking and Hollywood's Captain Phillips.

And I will compare the two in short spoiler-free reviews:

MOVIE REVIEW: A HIJACKING (2013)

Tobias Lindholm's A Hijacking is incredibly realistic that it feels like a documentary. From the Danish crew down to the Somali pirates, the performance of the entire cast is impressively natural that you'd often find yourself watching and listening with an open mouth.
In A Hijacking, also written by Lindholm, Somali pirates hijacked the Danish ship MV Roven and our point of sympathy is not the captain— but the ship's cook,  family man Mikkel (Pilou Asbæk). Back in Copenhagen, the ship's ow…

FUN TRIVIA ON THE MAKING OF DISNEY'S “FROZEN”

Image
Walt Disney Animation Studios (“Tangled,” “Wreck-It Ralph”) presents “Frozen,” a stunning big-screen comedy-adventure inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen.”

In the film, fearless optimist Anna sets off on an epic journey—teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven—to find her sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.

Get to know the interesting fun facts behind the making of “Frozen” below!

Wait, what? – One of Anna’s favorite phrases—“Wait, what?”—was added to the script compliments of Kristen Bell.
Pure fun – When the story team was developing the character of Olaf, the possibilities were endless. It was when they asked, “How would a snowman think?” that they found Olaf: pure, simple, innocent. His humor ultimately comes from the simple way …

PAUL GREENGRASS DIRECTS PULSE-POUNDING THRILLER “CAPTAIN PHILLIPS”

Image
In Columbia Pictures' new thriller “Captain Phillips” starring Tom Hanks, director Paul Greengrass charts the emotionally charged story of Somali pirates taking an American sea captain hostage, while simultaneously exposing the underlying economic divide that sets the event in motion.

The story begins in Vermont, where Captain Phillips (Hanks) leaves his family to sail cargo (partially food aid) halfway around the world — and at the same time in Somalia, where a former coastal fisherman, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), aims to overtake one of the high-value ships that passes through his coast every day. At the heart of the confrontation between Phillips and the desperate Somali pirates who take him hostage, Greengrass reveals the rift between those who are part of the lucrative ebb and flow of international trade, and those who are caught outside of it.

“GAME OF THRONES” DIRECTOR BRINGS EPIC STYLE TO “THOR: THE DARK WORLD”

Image
Acclaimed Emmy®-winning director Alan Taylor, known for his work on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” brings his style and love of “epic language” to Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World.” Taylor admits he was excited by the prospect of helming the film, saying, “I’d come to love having one foot in reality and one foot in fantasy. All of those things were coming together in this. Thor is a unique Super Hero because he carries so much weight of history and he carries a mythology. Those things gave him the kind of stature that I found exciting.”

From the beginning of his involvement, Taylor was keen on grounding the film in a sense of reality as the story takes place not only on Earth but on Asgard and other worlds of the Nine Realms as well. It was important for the director to never let the film depart from feeling both real and emotionally connected. “We’re making a big effort to ground it in a sense of ‘history,’ despite the fact that it is a made up world, “ explains Taylor. “It was important to m…

HEMSWORTH BACK AS THE MIGHTY AVENGER IN “THOR: THE DARK WORLD”

Image
Australian actor Chris Hemsworth reprises the role of Thor for the third time in Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World.”

In this latest epic adventure, Hemsworth is back in his glory, looking every bit like the Mighty Avenger that audiences have come to idolize. Hemsworth says of his return, “I love playing the character. The trick is to find new ways to make the character have some sort of advance or growth from the last film. Each time we get to break him down and find his human qualities and his vulnerable side it’s interesting because he has such a tough exterior and an unbreakable feel.”

In Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World,” Thor’s character arc does indeed continue, exploring both the fractured relationship between Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Thor, and Thor’s relationship with Jane (Natalie Portman). But Hemsworth reminds, “The bigger picture is that potentially Thor is stepping into the role of king, and he needs to prove that he deserves to be there and also understand and come to terms wi…

REVIEW | Metro Manila (2013)

Image
I attended an advance screening of Sean Ellis’ celebrated Metro Manila last Friday, October 7th, and I would like to thank Matt Suzara of Lakwatsera Lovers for the passes. After the screening, the main cast, as well as the director himself, Sean Ellis, talked about the film and answered questions from the stunned Filipino and British audience.
Metro Manila, if you haven’t yet heard, is UK’s entry to the 2014 Oscars, hoping to win a nomination in the Best Foreign Category.
The story is about Oscar (Jake Macapagal), a very poor Benguet farmer who, like most folks from the provinces, journey to the capital city for a “better life.” With his beautiful wife Mai (Althea Vargas) and two young children, and a small can of meek savings, the wide-eyed and innocent-looking Oscar is ready to start a new life in Metro Manila.

As the small family looks hopefully out of the jeepney window, and Oscar and Mai exchanging a look of excitement, feelings of dread and sympathy begin to envelope you. And wh…
