My rank of the 8 Oscar Best Picture Nominees 2016

#8 ROOM

A slow, manipulative movie based on an overrated novel. Tiresome, tedious, and too self-conscious. And the boy is too irritating to bear. 2 out of 5

 #7 THE BIG SHORT
The financial theme, and the technical jargon littering the script, is alienating despite the film's earnest efforts to explain things. Even if you get the gist of the story, the incomprehensible world of finance makes it hard to enjoy the details. Steve Carell sustains your delight. 3 out of 5

 #6 MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
A Heironymus Bosch painting come to life. This high-octane car chase has some of the most jaw-dropping cinematography in recent cinematic history. Thin story but high on performance. Surreal experience. 4 out of 5

#5 THE MARTIAN
Super fun and entertaining! 4.5 out of 5 Read full review.

#4 BROOKLYN

Romantic, poignant, and emotional, it's the perfect balance of understated and sentimental—without resorting to sappiness. Saoirse Ronan is superb. 4.5 out of 5

REVIEW | Brooklyn (2015)

Image
Set in 1952, Brooklyn takes you on a romantic, heart-warming, and poignant journey of a young Irish girl, Eilis (Saoirse Ronan), who is forced to migrate to Brooklyn, New York, to make something out of herself. And so we follow her emotional experiences—from her unbearable homesickness, to her first love (Emory Cohen), up until the sudden twist of events that will tear you apart.
This is a tender and touching coming-of-age story rendered in a very delicate, old-fashioned, and lyrical style. Absorbing, with a vivid production design, you will be swept away by the milestones in Eilis' life. She is your everyday girl, no extraordinary tale to tell, yet that what makes her story all the more compelling and refreshing—because it's a portrait of reality.

Ronan is remarkable here, transfixing in her deeply expressive face. Her powerful nuances connect you to every emotion she experiences as she goes through the new chapter of her life. It is a pure delight as she transitions from a …

VIKANDER SHINES WITH OSCAR-WORTHY PERFORMANCE FOR “THE DANISH GIRL”

Image
One of the most promising actors of her generation, Alicia Vikander has been a talent to watch in cinema in 2015, gaining international recognition, one film after another. After receiving acting prizes from several critics groups for her breakout role in “Ex Machina,” Vikander starts 2016 in style – copping her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her poignant performance in Universal Pictures' controversial drama, “The Danish Girl.”

In 1926 in Copenhagen, artist Einar Wegener is married to Gerda Wegener and is revered for landscape paintings. Gerda is also an artist, less renowned but steadily working as a portraitist of prominent citizens. Theirs is a strong and lovin…

FASHION AND MUSIC THROWBACK IN WINNING MOVIE “BROOKLYN”

Image
Brought to life with the dreamlike shadings of a love poem, “Brooklyn” unfolds in two distinctly atmospheric worlds: one amid the cloistered, muted beauty of Enniscorthy, Ireland and the other in the bustling chaos of New York’s Brooklyn, the frequent first stop of many immigrants to America, starring Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen and Domhnall Gleeson who make up the film’s love triangle.

The entirety of “Brooklyn” builds to the life-altering decisions Eilis (Ronan) must make: between Tony (Cohen) and Jim (Gleeson), between Brooklyn and Ireland, between her past and what she wants for her future. Everyone involved knew from the start that the story hinged on the uncertainty of her ultimate choice.

Helping to recreate the era in the minds of actors were the beautiful clothes sourced and created by Odile Dicks-Mireaux to evoke the inimitable elegance and grace of 1950s New York. She was thrilled to step back into that era. “It was a complete pleasure t…

“DEADPOOL” TO PAINT THE TOWN RED ON FEB.10 (IN CINEMAS)

Image
Expect plenty of wry humour in “Deadpool,” directed by Tim Miller and at Reynolds’ own experiences in the comic book world. Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, “Deadpool” tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
“Deadpool” star and producer Ryan Reynolds has no bigger fan than Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee, who has a fun cameo in the film and also serves as an executive producer. “There’s never been a character like Deadpool, and Ryan Reynolds plays him as though he was born to play the role,” says Lee. “Just like Robert Downey, Jr. was born to be Iron Man, you just can’t picture anybody else besides Ryan as Deadpool.”
Reynolds embraced the character’s myriad (and often…

REVIEW | The Revenant (2015)

Image
Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) in The Revenant is a fur trapper attacked by a grizzly bear and left for dead by his hunting companion, Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Consumed by raw desire for revenge, he fights for his life and crawls his way through the harsh and starkly beautiful North American frontier. This is inspired by true events.
In the deft hands of DP Emmanuel Lubezki, and through Alejandro G. Iñarritu's directorial vision, the camera doesn't just record the action and the drama, but drags you right in the center of it all—in full macro perception. So you walk along with the men, fall, get punched, and shot. Ripped apart by the grizzly. Arrowed by Arikara Native Americans. Snow, blood, spit, mud, and guts obscure your eyes, your body reacting to the pain. And in moments of meditation and journey, you are assaulted by the awesome and poetic beauty of the vast wilderness.
DiCaprio effectively grunts and wheezes his way though his tribulation, eloquent in his silence. And I…

“THE BIG SHORT” ENLISTS MARGOT, SELENA TO EXPLAIN COMPLEX CONCEPTS

Image
Because Paramount Pictures' “The Big Short” takes place within an industry riddled with obtuse terminology, director Adam McKay knew he needed an entertaining way to clarify some core concepts for the audience.

"People need to know this stuff in order to follow the story, but when you first hear phrases like 'collateralized debt obligation' or 'credit default swap,' they make you feel stupid and bored," McKay says. "Bankers do everything they can to make these transactions seem really complicated, so we came up with the idea of having celebrities pop up on the screen throughout the movie and explain things directly to the audience."

The cleverly staged cameos include “The Wolf of Wall Street” star Margot Robbie demystifying mortgage-backed securities while drinking champagne in a bubble bath, and chef/TV host Anthony Bourdain comparing leftover fish to toxic financial assets.

McKay says he recruited Bourdain for the scene after reading his memoir K…

HIS FIRST ACTION ROLE, JOHN KRASINSKI TRAINS HARD FOR “13 HOURS”

Image
Far from his image in the popular series “The Office,” a buff, bearded John Krasinski leads the cast of Paramount Pictures' new action-thriller “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” directed by Michael Bay.

Krasinski plays Jack Silva, one of six members of a security team made up of elite ex-military operators who fought to defend the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi from an attack of Islamist militants on Sept. 11, 2012 — the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

The movie features Krasinski in his first leading action role, in what is the biggest departure yet from the affable cube dweller he portrayed on the long-running NBC series.

Krasinski never really had to work out hard for a role before, so preparing to play this tough former Navy Seal was a challenge. During the run of “The Office,” he was actually encouraged not to be in superb shape. For “13 Hours,”, he put in an enormous amount of time to get in shape and was really excited to do it. Being in an action mo…

Coogler wrote and directed his first award-winning feature film, “Fruitvale Station,” in 2013. Most recently he directed the critically-acclaimed “Creed,” which earned Sylvester Stallone a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.

Black Panther has been an important character in the Marvel univers…

“THE 5TH WAVE” SETS EMOTIONAL STORY WITHIN ALIEN INVASION

Image
Up-and-coming director J Blakeson, whose first film was the thriller “The Disappearance of Alice Creed,” a film festival and critical favorite, takes the helm of Columbia Pictures new post-apocalyptic thriller “The 5th Wave,” based on the bestselling first novel in author Rick Yancey’s planned trilogy.

Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, Cassie (Chloe Grace Moretz) is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie teams up with a young man who may become her final hope – if she can only trust him.

STEVE CARELL, THE WALL STREET CRUSADER IN “THE BIG SHORT”

Image
At the moral center of Paramount Pictures’ riveting real-life tale “The Big Short” is the rage-filled hedge-fund manager known in the movie as Mark Baum and portrayed by Oscar-nominee Steve Carell.

(Watch the featurette “Meet Mark Baum”.)

Based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (“The Blind Side,” “Moneyball”), “The Big Short” also stars Academy Award-honorees Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt.

In the film, when four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything.

Baum, who runs Morgan Stanley subsidiary FrontPoint, fascinated Carell on multiple levels. "Mark has a very strong moral compass, yet at the same time he's immersed in the world of Wall Street, so in that way I think he's tortured," says the actor. "Mark believes he…

REVIEW | The Peanuts Movie (2015)

Image
If you fear that the 3D computer-animated treatment of the first ever Peanuts feature film in 35 years will ruin the the old-fashioned charm of your favorite comic strip, then you can now let out a sigh of relief. And if you expect that Charlie Brown will be using Instagram, Lucy doing selfies, and the gang addicted to their smartphone apps and referencing Justin Bieber or the Kardashians, then, good grief, no. The Peanuts Movie is cleared off any contemporaryblasphemy.
With immense relief—and great nostalgic joy—director Steve Martino and writers simply brought back the 100% original Peanuts universe. Still as simple, sweet, hilarious, and philosophical as  it was decades ago.
