NON-FICTION BOOK “THE BIG SHORT” NOW A PROVOCATIVE FILM

Image
Based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (“The Blind Side,” “Moneyball”), Paramount Pictures presents the sardonic comedy “The Big Short” directed by Adam Mckay (“Step Brothers”) and starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt.
In the film, when four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything.
Five years ago, when director Adam McKay read The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, he became fascinated with a farce of a different kind. Intrigued by the mixture of comedy, drama, and outright tragedy in Michael Lewis' brilliant behind-the-scenes look at the lead-up to the global economic meltdown, McKay yearned to take a break from absurdist comedies and bring “The Big Short” to the big screen.
"I started reading the bo…

From the producers of the blockbuster action movie “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” the feel-good story of “Eddie The Eagle” is about Michael “Eddie” Edwards (Egerton), a courageous yet unlikely British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as his family and the entire nation initially counted him out. Persistently trying to perfect his skill with the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach, portrayed by Hugh Jackman, Eddie eventually wins the hearts of sports fans round the globe when he performed a historic feat at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. GOLDEN GLOBES AND ANNIE AWARDS (2016) NOMINEE FOR BEST ANIMATION “SNOOPY AND CHARLIE BROWN THE PEANUTS MOVIE” VOICE CAST

Image
Golden Globes’ and Annie Awards’ 2016 nominee for Best Animated Motion Picture, “Snoopy and Charlie Brown The Peanuts Movie (3D)” will finally be seen in Philippine theatres starting January 8.
From the imagination of Charles M. Schulz and the creators of the Ice Age films, “Snoopy and Charlie Brown The Peanuts Movie” is at its core, about everyday anxieties we encounter while growing up, going to school, and dealing with the perceptions people have about one another. “We took that theme and changed the overall tone of the movie, which resulted in a stronger message, one that both adults and children can relate to,” says Craig Schulz, son of Charles.
The universal appeal of all Peanuts characters—encompassing Charlie Brown’s eternal underdog status, Linus’ heart, Franklin’s philosophy, Marcie’s introspection, Lucy’s crabbiness, Sally’s unrequited affection for her Sweet Babboo Linus, and Snoopy’s many personas— is the reason the strip and its characters have remained relevant as Pe…

LATINO ACTOR GUNS FOR PEOPLE'S VOTES IN “OUR BRAND IS CRISIS”

Image
In Warner Bros. Pictures' “Our Brand is Crisis,” front and center of the election chaos stands presidential candidate and veteran politico Castillo, who sees his consultants (led by Sandra Bullock's Jane Bodine) as a necessary evil, and whose mix of charm, pride and privilege is deftly captured by Portuguese actor Joaquim de Almeida (“Fast Five”).

The actor nearly didn’t make the “Our Brand is Crisis” shoot because of an ill-timed gym injury shortly before production, but instead opted to use the situation to his advantage. “Castillo is not an easy guy, not a smiling, happy guy. He has issues. He’s impatient. So I used my own discomfort for the character,” he says.

“He’s a man with money and power,” de Almeida continues. “Castillo is not used to being told what to do, especially by a woman, but these are experts who are well-paid and have run successful campaigns in other countries so he’s willing to hear them out. Then there’s a turning point when he sees the results of Jane’s …

REVIEW | Buy Now, Die Later (2015)

Image
Randolph Longjas' anthology horror-comedy Buy Now, Die Later is reminiscent of your childhood TV horror fare Tales from the Crypt, or Twilight Zone
Composed of five interconnected tales with the theme of greed and ambition, it centers on a mysterious shop called Santi's (perhaps a combination of Santi Bose's art and Santis Delicatessen?), owned by none other than the devil himself, named Santi (TJ Trinidad).
The five leading characters, driven by their own worldly desire, unwittingly sell their soul to the devil by purchasing an item, which works as a lucky charm to make their dreams come true.

The victims: A failed photojournalist and ambitious blogger, Odie, (Vhong Navarro) in "Masid"; Chloe (Alex Gonzaga), a superstar-wannabe in "Dinig"; Pippa (John Lapus), a lonely, insecure gay in "Halimuyak";  Ato (Rayver Cruz), a chef maintaining a booming restaurant in "Sarap,"; and Maita (Lotlot de Leon/Janine Gutierrez), a stage mother …

GUEST REVIEW | Buy Now, Die Later (2015)

Image
BY GUEST REVIEWER:
KL CARPIO

Randolph Longja's Buy Now, Die Later greets with a gentle surprise in this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) by putting the horror-comedy anthology genre into a well-baked cake that has never tasted this good.
Buy Now, Die Later is composed of five stories weaved together by a Devil-owned merchandise shop that preys on desperate people. The victims buy items from Santi, played by Sana Dati actor TJ Trinidad.
Santi does not accept money as payment from people who buy in his shop. He, instead, provides his victim's needs in exchange of their life. And each item bought has its own terms and conditions.
Here, the evil Santi deals with struggling photojournalist, Odie (Vhong Navarro) in "Masid" a frustrated celebrity, Chloe (Alex Gonzaga) in "Dinig"; Pippa (John Lapus), a lonely and severely insecure transgender in "Halimuyak"; Ato (Rayver Cruz), an ambitious chef and business owner of a newly established restau…

REVIEW | Walang Forever (2015)

Image
WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS
Screenwriter Mia Nolasco (Jennylyn Mercado) is the Nancy Meyers of Philippine cinema. And she has a big problem—a dry spell. No love life, no pain, no nothing, and so she is unable to write a follow-up to her previous big-screen romantic-comedy successes.
Her producers, naturally, are disappointed with her creative impotence and threaten to fire her if she cannot save her poorly written script. But the arrival of her ex-boyfriend, Ethan (Jericho Rosales), just might save Mia’s career at the last minute.
Penned by Paul Sta. Ana (My Husband’s Lover), with additional lines by Antoinette Jadaone (That Thing Called Tadhana), and directed by Dan Villegas (English Only, Please), Walang Forever has an appealing concept but fumbles through its execution. Like the sentiments of Mia’s producers, the film evokes a sense of struggle in the script-writing process, with illogical details, less effective storytelling techniques, a rough flow, and also lacks emotional build-…

REVIEW | Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens (2015)

Image
As someone born after the Star Wars genesis, my knowledge of the franchise is limited only to the familiar: the iconic names and faces, and lightsabers. Ask me about the fundamentals of its mythology and canon, I would just grin at you. But I do recognize its sacred place in the sci-fi and movie universe, and I am a happy observant of the hysteria of its multitude of serious fans.
In The Force Awakens, the bad guys, The First Order, and the good guys, The Resistance, are on the hunt for the vanished Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). The hero of this tale is a girl—a Keira Knightly lookalike named Rey (Daisy Ridley), a feisty Jakkuan scavenger with a curious origin.
Rey finds herself teamed up with a reformed First Order stormtrooper, Finn (John Boyega), and an uber cute beach-ball droid, BB-8 (Bill Hader) owned by Resistance pilot Poe (Oscar Isaac). Soon, they battle the evil, insecure Darth Vader wannabe, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), ultimately revealing bloodline issues and drama.
