CHANNING TATUM’S FIRST LEAD ROLE IN ANIMATION IN “THE BOOK OF LIFE”

Image
When it came to casting the new fantasy-adventure “The Book of Life,” director Jorge Gutierrez and producer Guillermo del Toro knew they would need a specific voice for the role of the town hero Joaquin. As the male counterpoint to the soulful Manolo (voiced by Diego Luna), he is both the best friend and romantic rival for the heart of Maria (voiced by Zoë Saldana). The two roles not only put a new spin to the classic “Prince Charming” type, they also represent the two sides of what it is to be a hero: the poet and the muscle.

Channing Tatum’s ascent to stardom has been built on roles that offered both archetypes at once, a key reason why he was sought for the character of Joaquin. With “The Book of Life,” Tatum was thrilled to finally enter the arena of animation in a lead role. And, when the role was pitched to the actor by Gutierrez, Tatum responded eagerly to the director’s impassioned telling of “The Book of Life.” “When we pitched Channing the movie, he loved it and was laugh…

The film follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life—a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom, dad, brother and sister all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn't had one.

“I am the patriarch, the father, the leader,” says Carell. “My character's been out of work for a while so he has assumed t…

FAKING IT IN “LET’S BE COPS” TRAILER AND POSTER RELEASE

Image
“Let’s Be Cops” is the ultimate buddy cop movie except for one thing: they're not cops. When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly minted “heroes” get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.

Faking it real time, these fake cops have just found some real trouble. Starring Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson, The idea for the movie was born when director/co-writer Luke Greenfield decided to spend Halloween in a police officer’s uniform – a choice that had unexpected consequences.

“My costume designer at the time got me a real LAPD uniform and my buddy and I walked around Los Angeles,” Greenfield remembers. “The sense of power and authority was incredible. I was single at the time, and it became quite easy to talk to women on the street.”

With co-writer and executive producer Nicholas Thomas, Greenfield developed the pitch that …

EXTRAORDINARY CAST BRINGS “ALEXANDER” CHARACTERS TO LIFE

Image
Walt Disney Pictures' big-screen adaptation of “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” required just the right family. “We assembled possibly the world’s loveliest family,” says director Miguel Arteta. “We wanted the audience to have fun, but also to feel this family’s warmth.”

The cast, adds the director, brought so much warmth to the big screen because they felt it on the set. “They all ended up falling in love—with each other,” says Arteta. “We had that spirit that you hope to get—but you don’t always get. The bond you see is real.”

Filmmakers cast a wide net to fill the role of the title character—casting directors saw more than 500 kids. “We had to find just right person to play Alexander,” says Arteta. “We didn’t want a typical child actor. Alexander needed to be the underdog. He’s like the one kid in the otherwise-perfect family portrait with his eyes closed.”

The director enlisted his wife to help scan hundreds of audition tapes. “The moment this Austral…

DOMINIC COOPER IS PRINCE VLAD'S NEMESIS IN “DRACULA UNTOLD”

Image
Exciting British actor Dominic Cooper (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Need for Speed”) stars as Mehmed, the nemesis of Prince Vlad (Luke Evans), in Universal Pictures' epic action-adventure, “Dracula Untold.” A dangerous adversary with a misplaced vengeance, Mehmed’s greed directly prompts Vlad’s transition into a creature of the night.

Director David Shore shares: “It’s easy to take it too over the top and be too ‘arch’ with this arch-nemesis character, so I wanted Mehmed to be engaging, charming, a conversationalist—a wonderful man to have in the room, but someone who you do not trust as far as you can throw!”

The filmmakers had seen Dominic Cooper in “The Devil’s Double” and were struck by his ability to be incredibly charming and yet, at a moment’s notice, switch to a psychotic state. Producer Michael De Luca relays: “Dominic has such range to go from Howard Stark in `Captain America' to what you see in `The Devil’s Double,' which was so intense. He was so in th…

MASTER OF THE UNDEAD RETURNS HOME IN “DRACULA UNTOLD”

Image
Since the publication of Bram Stoker’s definitive “Dracula” in 1897, one of the most enduring literary and popular characters of our time has been explored in film, animation, literature and music, and is as relevant today as he was when his creator spawned a cultural phenomenon almost 120 years ago. Although Dracula’s presence remains ubiquitous in culture, it remains surprising that the origins of this undead icon have never been explored on film...until now, in Universal Pictures' dark thriller “Dracula Untold.”

While the man history calls Dracula, for all intents and purposes, was actually a real historical figure, just as terrifying to millions of people are the vampires of ancient myth. Found in almost every culture and language on Earth—from the Babylonians’ Lilitu, a succubus who thrived on babies, to the iron-toothed Asasabonsam of the Ashanti peoples of Ghana—the legend of blood-sucking creatures of the night may be traced back thousands of years. But it was not until the…

CREATING THE ACTION IN “EXODUS: GODS & KINGS”

Image
Filmed at Pinewood Studios in London and on location in Almeria, Spain and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Exodus: Gods & Kings is the reimagining of one of the greatest stories ever told by one of the best filmmakers working today.

Filmed in 3D, Scott’s film will tell the story of Moses, abandoned by a desperate mother as a baby after the Egyptian rulers orders the murder of all boys born to slaves. The boy is found in the bulrushes by the Pharaoh’s daughter and raised in the royal household, where he grows up alongside Ramses, the future monarch. As a man, Moses has a vision and turns his back on his privileged life and leads his people, the Israelites, from enslavement. Scott’s film will feature ground-breaking special effects, including the plagues visited upon Egypt and the parting of the Red Sea.

Working with Scott to realize the grandeur of the movie's action sets and pieces is Arthur Max, who is also featured in this special video. Max is a double Academy®-Award…

BEFORE “THE CONJURING” THERE WAS “ANNABELLE”

Image
Annabelle, the infamous doll at the center of one of paranormal experts Ed and Lorraine Warren’s most profiled cases, made her terrifying screen debut in James Wan’s box office sensation “The Conjuring.” Even while shooting the film, Wan and producer Peter Safran were already entertaining the idea that the not-so-innocent doll needed an entire movie of her own.

Wan, who has always been fascinated with the Annabelle case, says, “We know she’s so bad that, even after all this time, she still has to be kept locked up ...but, how did she get that way?”

Safran adds, “How does something so charming, so sweet, become a conduit for pure evil and destruction?”

Now, New Line Cinema’s supernatural thriller “Annabelle” answers those questions by tracing where it all began for the terrifying doll.
Wan and Safran approached Wan’s longtime director of photography, John R. Leonetti, to direct the film. “I have been very fortunate to have had John there right by my side, shooting on most of my films, so i…

ZOE SALDANA’S EXTRAORDINARY FAIRY TALE IN “THE BOOK OF LIFE”

Image
From visionary filmmaker Jorge Gutierrez whose unique visual style and vibrant storytelling technique, “The Book of Life” tells the story of three best friends - Manolo and his equally courageous best friend Joaquin are not your typical Prince Charmings; the object of their affections is far from being your average princess, hence “The Book of Life” is a fairy tale that doesn’t go by the book.

Our story begins in a museum, where we meet a mysterious tour guide named Mary Beth, who is taken on the seemingly thankless task of guiding a group of rowdy kids who would rather be anywhere else, on a tour. But Mary Beth has something special in store for them, and escorts them into a secret room, where the magic of “The Book of Life” begins to unfold. “This particular area of the museum looks like Latin America basically exploded into it, turning it into a place filled with life and color,” says Gutierrez.

Christina Applegate voices Mary Beth and introduces us to the principal character…

GRITTY, REALISTIC ACTION SCENES PAY OFF IN “THE EQUALIZER”

Image
To realize the action of Columbia Pictures’ new action-thriller “The Equalizer,” the conversations began between director Antoine Fuqua, Denzel Washington, and Keith Woulard, one of the film’s stunt coordinators. “There’s a tendency in shooting action to shake the camera and move things around – the audience can’t tell what’s happening,” says Fuqua. That’s just what they didn’t want to do. “My goal was to take acting and make it action,” says Fuqua.

Fuqua’s inspiration for the way he would shoot the action scenes with McCall, Denzel’s character, was inspired by his interaction with real-life boxers. “I happen to have a very good friend who’s a great boxer – Sugar Ray Leonard,” he notes. “He’ll tell stories, and you’ll realize how smart a boxer can be. Sometimes they’ll touch you – hey, how you doin’ today? – and that’s their way of checking you out, seeing if you’re in shape, if they think you’re a threat. Or they’re watching you a certain way, to see how you move, how your bod…

CHLOE GRACE MORETZ ENLISTS HELP OF “THE EQUALIZER”

Image
Coming off the success of “If I Stay,” Chloë Grace Moretz now joins the cast of Columbia Pictures' new action-thriller “The Equalizer” as Teri – a young girl who has been forced into a life of intimidation and terror. After meeting with McCall (Denzel Washington), her story will reawaken in him a desire for justice.

For Moretz, it’s easy to see that the title role is perfect for Washington. “He’s so Denzel in the way he does his job,” she says, “McCall can be the most sweet, charming guy, with a huge smile on his face – and the next minute, he’s a killer, and you’re thinking, ‘WHOA! That happened quickly!’”

Of her role as Teri, the young actress says, “When I first heard that the character is a prostitute I thought that it would be a `Taxi Driver' type of role – pushing the boundaries a bit. But I was surprised. The role doesn't glorify prostitution nor make it cotton-candy. You never see her in the actual act of prostitution. The focus isn't on her profession but who sh…

“THE JUDGE” FINDS HIMSELF SUSPECTED OF MURDER

Image
In Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures' “The Judge,” Robert Downey, Jr. stars as big city lawyer Hank Palmer, who returns to his childhood home where his estranged father, the town’s judge (Robert Duvall), is suspected of murder. He sets out to discover the truth and along the way reconnects with the family he walked away from years before.

The seeds of the film’s story sprung from director David Dobkin’s experience with his own parents—a powerful attorney father and emotionally volatile mother—when he found himself in the difficult position of seeing his mother through the final stages of a terminal illness after his father passed.

Dobkin says he’s long harbored a desire to explore on film the complicated emotions inherent in an experience many adults find themselves thrown into. “Like me, I think a lot of people don’t realize that having to ‘parent a parent’ is a part of life—until it happens to them,” Dobkin reflects. “And when you’re unprepared for an experience …
