REVIEW | 45 Years

Image
It's the week before Geoff (Tony Courtenay) and Kate's (Charlotte Rampling) 45th wedding anniversary. We immediately see a picture of a strong, happy, and contented marriage, the elderly childless couple enjoying retirement in their cozy Norfolk suburban home. Then a letter arrives, and the first crack in their 45 years of marriage appears.
The German letter announces that the body of Geoff's ex-girlfriend Katya has been found in the Swiss Alps, 50 years after her death. The news greatly impacts Geoff, making him agitated, distracted. He retreats into the past and relives with vividness and clarity his and Katya's days as lovers.
Andrew Haigh's naturalistic British romantic drama is subtle and understated, yet sharp, painful, and emotionally charged. Rampling and Courtenay both deliver exemplary performance; the nuances, the body language, the tiny gestures, the eyes, the words unspoken.

As the 45th anniversary party approaches, Kate's doubt and fear escalat…

(Watch the clip “Just Go Back” featuring Chris Pine)

“The Finest Hours” is based on the extraordinary true story of the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history in the U.S. Presented in Digital 3D, the film transports audiences to the heart of the action, creating a fully-immersive cinematic experience on an epic scale.

Pine, who has starred in the “Star Trek” films, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” and “Into the Woods,” among numerous others, appreciated the story’s simplicity and was drawn to the character of Petty Officer First Class Bernie Webber, the amiable captain of the CG36500 lifeboat, who becomes an unlikely hero.

“Bernie is sweet and quite gentle and is a man who hasn’t really found his voice yet. He grew up in a family of very strong men who w…

FASHION VILLAINS MUGATU, ALEXANYA JOIN FORCES IN “ZOOLANDER 2”

Image
Comic geniuses Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig band together as the fabulous evil villains Jacobim Mugatu and Alexanya Atoz, respectively, in Paramount Pictures' hilarious comedy sequel, “Zoolander 2.”

So iconic that he can be identified by silhouette, Jacobim Mugatu stands alongside some of the most revered and reviled villains in cinema history. With a penchant for outrageous outfits, small dogs, latte-throwing, and the ability to determine who is really hot right now, Mugatu is a truly unique character unlike any other.

Considered a newcomer at the time of the original “Zoolander” in 2001, comedian Will Ferrell embraced the opportunity to create such an absurd character from the ground up. “All these characters in the fashion world are so much fun because it’s fertile ground,” says Ferrell. “Mugatu is an important character for me because it was the first time I had the chance to do a big broad character that ended up resonating with people.”

For Ferrell, donning the infamous wig ag…

REVIEW | Zootopia (2016)

Image
A buddy-cop noir addressing issues of stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination, this anthropomorphic Disney film is a clear call for harmony and acceptance in the midst of diversity.
Zootopia is the metaphorical New York, a scary big city and a melting pot of highly evolved predators and prey. Although lions and sheep are coexisting in the same workplace, distrust, fear, and tension are still simmering.
Our heroine is the idealistic Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), who, determined to break stereotypes, pursues a dream career in the police force in predator-riddled Zootopia and prove that she can be more than a dumb carrot-farming bunny common among her "kind."
Arriving in ultra-modern Zootopia from the burrows, the rookie cotton-tail frustratingly finds herself still a victim of a caste system—and worse, prevented by her boss (Idris Elba) to exercise her police skills. But when accidentally given a chance to crack a major case, she reluctantly teams up with a wily fox, the …

REVIEW | How to be Single (2016)

Image
Forced, confused, and corny. Despite earnest efforts to promote a strong sense of self, it fails to entertain or inspire.
New York. Forever in a relationship, Alice (Dakota Johnson) breaks up with long-time boyfriend Josh (Nicholas Braun) for that tiresome reason: to find herself. Seconds later, a hedonistic sex maniac (Rebel Wilson) takes Alice under her wing and teaches her how to pick up men in bars. Then bartender Tom (Anders Holm) comes along to teach her about one-night stands. And, like a robot, Alice, without reservations, allows herself to be swept away in pointless hookups readily available to her. Why?
A slew of other thinly developed characters who are single decorate this Christian Ditter film adapted from Lucy Tuccillo's novel: A desperate online dater (Alison Brie), a commitment-phobe nurse (Leslie Mann), and a very insignificant add-on, single-dad David (Damon Wayan's, Jr). Alice, the main character, however, takes the cake for being the most thinly and badly …
