REVIEW | Don't Breathe (2016)

Image
Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez of Evil Dead fame gives us a tight horror-thriller in Don't Breathe.
Three young Detroit thieves, Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette), and Money (Daniel Zovatto) frequently break into fancy homes for a living. But after realizing that stealing valuables is not as lucrative as they thought, they decide to steal some major cash from an old guy who lives alone (Stephen Lang) in a decrepit house—who turn out to be blind.

But what is supposed to be an easy heist turns out to be just the horrific opposite.
Blind Man turns out to be a burly ex-military man suffering from a severe case of PTSD, so when the robbers get caught in the act, we are thrown into a stressful and brutal cat-and-mouse chase inside his dark house. Alvarez and cinematographer Pedro Luque's intense and brilliant camerawork, combined with a very neat sound design and effects, magnifies the horror and the tension, sucking you into the dark, suffocating labyrinth inside the hou…

REVIEW | The Secret Life of Pets (2016)

Image
What do pets do as soon as you leave the house? That's the "secret" this animated movie aims to reveal. That delicious voyeuristic opportunity one is given to finally see their pets' secret activities.
Of course, The Secret Life of Pets is a fantasy comedy-adventure, and with a concept similar to Toy Story, you expect your adorable cuddly companions' life behind closed doors to be funnier than what you see. But in this case, you are given more slapstick comedy than wit. No surprise, as this is created by the same people behind the slapstick phenomenon Despicable Me and the iconic Minions
The humor seems to be inspired by countless YouTubes of pets in funny accidents, their basic behavior, plus some anthropomorphic behavior mostly seen in Millenials, like wild house parties.

The story is set in New York, with a magical quality to it. Everything looks so Woody Allen New York. Enchanting and hip. And we are taken into the gorgeous Manhattan apartment of our hero,…

On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was…

VIRAL NEED-A-DATE AD TURNED MOVIE IN “MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES”

Image
Based on the real story of brothers Mike and Dave Stangle, who posted the following ad on Craigslist stating their need for wedding dates for their cousin’s wedding: TWO MEN NEED WEDDING DATES : My brother and I are looking for wedding dates. We've been told by the bride that bringing dates is "mandatory" so we "won't harass all of my friends all night" and "stay under control.” Rather than ask some fringe women in our lives to go and face the inevitable 'does this mean he wants to take it to the next level!?' questions, we'd rather bring complete strangers and just figure it out. Still reading? In anticipation of your questions we've developed an FAQ section below.

The ad became a viral phenomenon in hours, and the story soon spread from the internet to media outlets the world over. It also displayed a remarkable prescience; the boys estimated an 85% chance of their story becoming a movie, though they said, “we refuse the right to …

"AVATAR'S" STEPHEN LANG TERRIFIES AS THE BLIND MAN IN “DON'T BREATHE”

Image
Best known for his iconic role as Colonel Miles Quaritch in James Cameron's “Avatar,” Stephen Lang now stars as the unnamed Blind Man in Columbia Pictures' critically acclaimed horror-thriller “Don't Breathe.”

In the film, a trio of friends – Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette) and Money (Daniel Zovatto) – breaks into the house of a blind recluse confident of an easy score only to find themselves in a terrifying life-or-death struggle.

The trio’s adversary, known only as the Blind Man, is a military veteran who lost his sight when he was wounded during the first Gulf War. His wife died shortly after his return to the States and his only child was run down by a careless driver. Since then, he’s become a recluse, the only resident left on his deserted street.

“This all started with the Blind Man,” says director Fede Alvarez (“Evil Dead”). “He’s an unusual character. Movies often portray people with handicaps as noble or saintly. We took this guy in a completely differe…

Kate Mara, who had just come off a starring turn in Ridley Scott’s blockbuster, Oscar-nominated “The Martian,” portrays Lee. “My character is hired to visit the facility and assess Morgan’s viability and whether it presents a continuing risk,” Mara explains. In short, Lee holds the power of life or death over the subject of her investigation.

The other scientists and staff at the facility soon come to understand that Lee, despite her position as a kind of corporate crisis manager—a “suit”—is som…

WITH “DON'T BREATHE,” JANE LEVY AINT THROUGH WITH HORROR-THRILLERS YET

JENNY SLATE LENDS VOICE TO POMERANIAN IN “THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS”

Image
After voicing for the sheep Bellwether in “Zootopia” – and before doing voice work as Harley Quinn in the upcoming “The LEGO Batman Movie” -- fast-rising actress Jenny Slate (“Obvious Child”) will be heard as a Pomeranian dog in Universal Pictures and Illumination's “The Secret Life of Pets,” opening in Philippine cinemas August 24.

Slate plays Gidget, a naïve, but gutsy Pomeranian who is 50% fluff, 110% tough, and a secret admirer of hero dog, Max.

In the film, Max (Louis C.K.), a quick-witted Terrier rescue who’s convinced he sits at the center of owner Katie’s universe, finds his pampered life turned upside down when she brings home Duke (Eric Stonestreet), a sloppy, massive mess of a mongrel with zero interpersonal skills. When this reluctant canine duo finds themselves out on the mean streets of New York, they have to set aside their differences and unite against a fluffy, yet cunning, bunny named Snowball, whose army of pets are out to turn the tables on humanity…all this and …

LEGACY OF FEAR REBORN IN LATEST “BLAIR WITCH” MOVIE

Image
Back in 1999, “The Blair Witch Project” became a global phenomenon and left a haunting fear of being alone in the woods. The nearly no-budget film grossed millions and set the gold standard for found footage movies, spawning a new generation of horror fans.

“Elly Kedward, the woman accused of witchcraft and left to die in the Maryland woods in 1785, is the first recorded story of the Blair Witch legend,” says executive producer Gregg Hale. “But the evil in those woods is much, much older than that.” For several years, Lionsgate had been searching for the right concept to reboot Blair Witch, as well as filmmakers who could satisfy the fans of the first film and reach a new generation of moviegoers.

In the latest “Blair Witch” movie, it’s been 20 years since James’s sister and her two friends vanished into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland while researching the legend of the Blair Witch, leaving a trail of theories and s…

WILL SMITH ON TARGET AS DEADSHOT IN “SUICIDE SQUAD”

Image
Superstar Will Smith leads the Super Villains ensemble as master marksman Deadshot in Warner Bros. Pictures' action adventure “Suicide Squad.”

(Watch “Suicide Squad's” It's Good to Be Bad featurette here)

“I have always loved the superhero genre, and [director-writer] David Ayer wanted to make a truly fun film that put a powerful story into the package, which looked at the difference between being bad and being evil. I thought it was a great opportunity to play a character who, seeing as he’s a father, is very much at odds with what he does for a living but at the same time really, really good at it,” he smiles.

“The Suicide Squad is comprised of all these deadly incarcerated villains,” explains producer Charles Roven. “What would they do, given the chance to reduce their sentences or even gain their freedom, even if it’s likely they won’t survive the mission? And they take that shot—not that they’re given much choice.”

Though seemingly given a “choice,” the prisoners who will…

GET INSIDE THE ACTION OF “BEN-HUR'S” CHARIOT RACE SEQUENCE

Image
The breathtaking, action-packed chariot race sequence in Paramount Pictures' upcoming “Ben-Hur” gets the spotlight in the newly released featurette that may be viewed at HERE.

“Ben-Hur” is the epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother Messala (Toby Kebbell), an officer in the Roman army. Stripped of his title and separated from his family and the woman he loves (Nazanin Boniadi), Judah is forced into slavery. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption.

The climactic moment of the film, Ben-Hur’s deadly chariot race against Messala, was shot over 32 days at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios. From day one, the decision was made to film the majority of the chariot race in camera, requiring twelve weeks of intensive chariot training for Huston and Kebbell. Though both had previous horse riding experience, racing with a four horse team proved to be a completely new skill set.

MILA KUNIS TEAMS UP WITH SINGLE AND OVERSTRESSED MOMS IN R-RATED MOVIE “BAD MOMS”

Image
In the estrogen-filled comedy “Bad Moms,” Amy Mitchell (Mila Kunis, “Black Swan”) has a seemingly perfect life: a great marriage, over-achieving kids, a beautiful home and a career. However, she's over-worked, over-committed and exhausted to the point that she's about to snap.

Fed up, she joins forces with two other over-stressed moms, Kiki (Kristen Bell, “Frozen”) and Carla (Kathryn Hahn, “Transparent”), on a quest to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities – going on a wild, un-mom-like binge of long overdue freedom, fun and self-indulgence –and putting them on a collision course with PTA Queen Bee Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate) and her clique of devoted, perfect moms, Vicky (Annie Mumolo) and Stacy (Jada Pinkett Smith).

Kunis signed on as lead character Amy Mitchell, a working mom whose myriad obligations leave her cut off from friendships, let alone the idea of fun for its own sake. Poor Amy is too busy to realize what she is missing. “Really…

MEET THE OTHER GIANTS IN DISNEY'S “THE BFG”

Image
Not all giants in Disney's “The BFG” are friendly. Based on the beloved book by Roald Dahl, the film tells the imaginative story of a young girl named Sophie and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. But Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of nine fearsome giants – the brothers of the BFG himself -- who have become increasingly more bothersome.

The cannybull and murderful motley group of mythical beasts who roam the earth gobbling up human beans provided all kinds of opportunities for invention, creativity and frightening fun for Steven Spielberg, his actors and his creative team.

Of all the evil giants who inhabit Giant Country, the BFG’s nine brothers are the worst. Substantially larger in size, they treat the BFG with cruelty and disdain, but in typical Roald Dahl fashion, they are also there to make us laugh. Dahl was somewhat of a giant in real life himself, standing 6-feet, 6-inches-tall.
