HYPER-KINETIC ACTION MOVIE “HARDCORE HENRY” SHOT ON GOPRO CAMERAS

Image
Prepare for a mind-blowing immersive cinematic encounter in “Hardcore Henry” as it gives the audience a chance to experience the entire film through the point-of-view of its main character (cyborg) named Henry.

First time director Ilya Naishuller helms “Hardcore Henry” wherein Henry remembers nothing and his wife Estelle (played by Haley Bennett) has been kidnapped by an extremely powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries. The line between hero and villain in “Hardcore Henry” is tenuous as he tries to follow and uncover the devious plot against him within the city of Moscow. The audience – Henry, essentially – assesses in real time just who is friend and who is foe.

Shot almost entirely on GoPro cameras with custom engineered rigs, “Hardcore Henry” completely abandons, even eviscerates, traditional filmmaking and replaces it with a raw and immediate experience, allowing the audience to become one with the protagonist, so viewers go on a very personal and breathtaking journey w…

THE FOUR HORSEMEN UNLEASHED IN THIS YEAR’S BIGGEST BATTLE SPECTACLE “X-MEN: APOCALYPSE”

Image
The critically hailed blockbuster “X-Men: Days of Future Past” was a tough act to follow. Following his acclaimed work, director Bryan Singer takes the franchise to new heights with “X-Men: Apocalypse,” in which the X-Men battle the original and most powerful mutant -- Apocalypse.

Staged in 1983, the invincible and immortal Apocalypse is set free after being entombed for several millennia. Enraged that his kind are no longer treated as gods, Apocalypse assembles a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to destroy humankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. To end Apocalypse’s path of global destruction, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) and Professor X (James McAvoy) lead a team of young X-Men in an epic showdown with a seemingly unstoppable enemy.

Once again fueled by rage and revenge, Magneto is vulnerable to Apocalypse’s offer to join him as one of his newly-reformed Four Horseme…

NICHOLAS HOULT AND KRISTEN STEWART DARE TO FALL IN LOVE IN “EQUALS”

Image
In the romantic science fiction drama “Equals,” Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult play star-crossed lovers being watched closely by a Big Brother in a future where emotions are disabled to achieve a peaceful society.

Produced by Ridley Scott’s production house, Scott Free and directed by accomplished filmmaker Drake Doremus, “Equals” is an emotionally and visually arresting film from a screenplay by Nathan Parker based on a story idea from Doremus.

“Equals” is a nuanced, slow-burning love story, the film is set in a futuristic utopia where emotions have been genetically suppressed in an effort to protect society from the war and strife that has destroyed previous generations. On occasion, the suppression fails and emotions emerge in individuals – the Collective dubs this illness Switched On Syndrome, or SOS. As society is increasingly threatened by this health crisis, all SOS sufferers are heavily medicated or sent to the Den, a corrective facility from which no one returns.

FROM “INSIDE OUT,” BILL HADER NOW INVADES “THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE”

Image
Hot off voicing the emotion Fear in the Oscar-winning “Inside Out” and starring in the hit comedy “Trainwreck,” actor Bill Hader now takes the role of the porcine principal, Leonard, in Columbia Pictures' new adventure comedy “The Angry Birds Movie.”

Leonard is the leader of the pigs, the one who launches the birds’ beef against the pork. Proud, egomaniacal, and vain, Leonard’s a real pig, so no wonder that he ruffles Red’s feathers a bit.

“Leonard is super charismatic – so charming that he wins over the birds straight away,” says director Fergal Reilly. “Bill created a voice that had authority, but also charm – a showman personality. Bill has a velvety quality to his voice – warm and super funny – so when Leonard arrives on Bird Island, he wins the birds over effortlessly.”

Regarding Leonard’s distinctive cadence in speaking, Hader says, “My first recording session for the movie was really trying to figure out the voice. The filmmakers were saying they wanted it to be like Robert Pr…

TEAM IRON MAN BATS FOR RESPONSIBILITY IN “CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR”

Image
Robert Downey Jr. returns as the godfather of all Super Heroes, Tony Stark and leads Team Iron Man in Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War.”

Tony Stark is a different man—he’s made an honest assessment of the recent events with Ultron and, in a shocking conservative turnaround, is in agreement with world governments that the Avengers should be regulated. This move pits Iron Man against Captain America on a political level but their personal conflict runs deeper—and down a more dangerous path than either could have ever anticipated or imagined.

The actor explains what it means when Iron Man and Captain America find themselves at odds in the film’s story. “You don’t want to see these two characters create a tear in the fabric of their relationship because you know how pervasive it can be,” says Downey. “So it gives you a fair amount of shatter to play with. I’ve always liked the idea of how do you recover from that. What has to happen for there to be any sort of homeostasis by the end of …

“MONEY MONSTER” CHARACTER POSTERS TRICK THE EYE

Image
The new character posters for Columbia Pictures' new suspense thriller “Money Monster,” have just been released, and they are intresting to look at.

By cutting the characters' faces in unexpected ways, the one-sheets have conveyed the chaos and tension of the story, and at the same time, echoed the visual disturbance of analog-era TV sets. The movie is about a TV show held hostage by a viewer, after all.

Directed by Jodie Foster, the film stars George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Jack O’Connell (“300: Rise of an Empire,” “Unbroken”). “Money Monster” has also been announced as an official selection of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival where it will premiere next month.

In the taut and tense thriller “Money Monster,” Lee Gates (Clooney) is a bombastic TV personality whose popular financial network show has made him the money wiz of Wall Street. But after he hawks a high tech stock that mysteriously crashes, an irate investor (O’Connell) takes Gates, his crew, and his ace producer Patty F…

SINAG MAYNILA | REVIEW | Expressway (2016)

Image
Ato Bautista's Expressway, an entry to this year's Sinag Maynila Independent Film Festival, mildly reminds you of Erik Matti's On the Job. The film features two hitmen: an old man about to exit and his trigger-happy, unpredictable young protege. But if On the Job provides a fascinating insight into a crime syndicate—therefore violence is a necessity—Expressway only provides gratuitous violence.

Expressway is the tale of two hitmen, one on the road to redemption, and the other, well, is just eye-rolling crazy. But it feels as if the movie's primary aim is to impress the audience with graphic violence (and sex) and it just built a story around it—finding an opportunity to shoot a guy in the head point blank and pull the trigger at children (yes, kids. And this is rated PG-13? Seriously?) and rain the movie with cuss words, 1 in every 3 seconds.
Old-timer Manong Ben (Alvin Anson) and the comically macabre Morris (Aljur Abrenica) hit the road to accomplish their assignment…

TEAM CAP FIGHTS FOR FREEDOM OF THE AVENGERS IN “CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR”

Image
Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” begins and ends with its lead character Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Chris Evans). After another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

“It’s the first time Steve doesn’t really know the answer,” says Chris Evans. “It’s always pretty cut and dry for him to know which side of the coin to fall on but this one is tricky because this conflict is a little more akin to a day-to-day struggle that we all go through where there are no clear lines between what is right and what is wrong. There’s just a point of view, and I think it’s hard for him to unde…

REVIEW | The Jungle Book (2016)

Image
The man-cub Mowgli (Neel Sethi), raised by a pack of wolves in the dense jungle of India, is berated by the panther Bagheera (Beng Kingsley), admonished to “act like a wolf” and quit his human “tricks.” But Mowgli can’t help it. Despite being at home in the wild, his human nature comes out naturally.
But when the vindictive, cold-blooded tiger, the anti-man-cub Shere Khan (Idris Elba) thinks Mowgli should be dead, the boy not only finds himself in physical danger, but in an identity crisis as well. Where does Mowgli truly belong?
Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book is the best live-action Disney adaptation in recent history. Based on Rudyard Kipling’s books, and an adaptation of the 1967 Disney animated film, Favreau’s treatment is raw—more sinister than enchanting. More Animal Planet, or National Geographic, than a fantasy musical-comedy.
Cinematographer Bill Pope’s quick zoom-in and panning puts you as a spectator, as if you’re hiding behind the bushes with a pair of binoculars and wat…

ANNA KENDRICK AND SAM ROCKWELL KILLER COUPLE IN R-RATED ROMCOM “MR. RIGHT”

Image
Blending dancing, violence and romance into one-of-a-kind hybrid entertainment, “Mr. Right” stars Anna Kendrick as manic Martha who falls in for Francis (Sam Rockwell), a professional assassin with a cause.

When Martha discovers that her new beau is a professional hitman, who kills the people ordering the hits. But the bodies pile up, Martha must decide whether to flee or join her man in the mayhem.

Like her co-star Rockwell, Anna Kendrick combines dramatic chops -- showcased in her Oscar-nominated “Up in the Air” performance -- with the natural wit displayed in “Pitch Perfect” and its blockbuster sequel. When she read the “Mr. Right” script, Kendrick savored the chance to go a little wild. "The most exciting thing for me was the way Max wrote Martha as someone who's always been a little psychotic," Kendrick says. "He mentioned to me that some script notes suggested he make her this mild mannered girl until she encounters Mr. Right. But I thought it was funny and wis…
