Ma'Rose in Philippine cinemas July 6

2009 Cannes Best Director Brillante Mendoza talks about MA‘ ROSA, his inspiration, and the challenges in making the film.

Describe Ma’Rosa in one sentence
MA‘ ROSA shows us a glimpse of a Filipino family set on a typical district in Manila, giving us a slice of life in a community.
What made you pursue the story behind Ma’ Rosa?
The idea of this film came up four years ago when I became indirectly involved with the said incident. It captured my interest to tell this story because it shows a unique but also disturbing characteristic of a common Filipino family. That when a family member is backed against the wall for the wrong doings that he or she made, you will do everything to keep them out of trouble even if it means violating basic virtues. In a society where survival of the fittest is a fact that we have to live with, family becomes amoral.

What were the challenges in putting the story together for the screen?
The whole film was treated like a documentary film with a strong feel of real…

Iconic actor Samuel L. Jackson stars in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The Legend of Tarzan” as George Washington Williams, a real-life but relatively unsung hero from 19th-century American history who becomes Tarzan’s unexpected ally in the film.

“George Washington Williams was a man of so many talents and such bravery – to be this 14-year-old kid and go off to fight in the war between the States,” Jackson details. “And he went on to run for office, became a preacher, and did so many other things. So it was an opportunity to let people know that there was this man, historically, who actually went to the Congo and wrote a letter to King Leopold II about what he was doing to its population. Hopefully, people will see this movie and dig out their phones – or, as we used to say, ‘go to the library’ – and Google George Washington Williams and find out what actually transpired in the Congo.”

Of course, the real Williams didn’t race through the Congolese jungle with Tarzan, but Jackson says it “make…

REVIEW | Finding Dory (2016)

Thirteen years after the classic Finding Nemo, Disney-Pixar now tells the story of our favorite forgetful blue tang fish, Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), and her origins.

Six months after the events of Finding Nemo, during a talk on stingray migration, the amnesiac Dory suddenly experiences flashes of memories from her childhood and begins a quest to search for her home and a family she vaguely remembers.

Finding Dory makes the simple tale of getting lost, finding, and coming home thoroughly emotional and riotous. It anchors on a strong screenplay, focused on delivering a rich adventure story rather than impressing us with gimmickry. Each sequence is inspired and heartfelt rather than self-aware. The comedy is precise and intelligently woven into Dory's predicament, yearning, and unflagging determination,  most of the time triggering prolonged, rip-at-the-seams laughter.

As Dory bravely overcomes her disability to get to her birthplace, the Jewel of Morro Bay, California, she is aided by …

REVIEW | Me Before You (2016)

In the movie adaptation of Jojo Moyes' best-selling romantic novel, the khaleesi (Emilia Clarke) plays the 26-year-old heroine, Lou, a working class fashion victim hired to take care of an ultra wealthy quadriplegic, Will (Sam Claflin).

Hopelessly depressed, Will is set to end his life at the Swiss-based assisted suicide program, Dignitas. But can Lou's arrival in his miserable life change his decision?

Screenplay penned by the author herself and directed by Thea Sharrock, Me Before You is engaging but thinly developed. For such a strong and rich premise—love threatened by death—the storytelling is shallow. Lou and Will do not develop a strong connection; their relationship does not  go beyond trivial and unfunny conversations, or beyond luxury vacations wherein Lou would rather read a book than talk to Will. And Will seems more amused and concerned about his caregiver rather than in love with a woman. Sometimes you also get the impression that Lou is using Will so she can be…

The music in New Line Cinema's sentimental romance “Me Before You” was carefully interspersed with the film’s score, created by composer Craig Armstrong, to evoke the romantic and provocative sensibilities of the story.

Among the popular songs that can be heard on the soundtrack are Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” and “Photograph,” “Unsteady (Erich Lee Gravity Remix)” from X Ambassadors, “Till The End” from Jessie Ware, and Imagine Dragons’ “Not Today.”

“Craig’s music and the songs we were able to find have a huge impact in the film,” director Thea Sharrock says. “They really resonate with what’s happening between [the lead characters] Louisa and Will at every turn and every stage of their relationship.”

Meanwhile, Interscope Records through MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines) has released the soundtrack to “Me Before You” and is now available to download/stream via digital stores. The CD will be available for only Php 459.00 at Astroplus/Astrovision stores starting June 10.
