MEET THE CHEERLEADER-JOCK COUPLE IN “THE GALLOWS”

Image
In Warner Bros.' new horror thriller “The Gallows,” four high school students find themselves in grave danger after getting locked in the auditorium overnight. Three of them—Reese, Ryan and Cassidy—are there to sabotage the sets for the upcoming school play; the fourth, Pfeifer, the play’s female lead, has followed them in, correctly suspecting they’re up to no good.

Playing the classic cheerleader-jock pair of Ryan and Cassidy are actors Ryan Shoos (“As Night Comes”) and Cassidy Gifford (“God's Not Dead”). Yes, to keep things feeling more genuine for the cast, the filmmakers used the lead actors’ first names as character names.

Because the character of Ryan also serves in large part as the film’s storyteller-cum-cameraman, directors Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff knew that the actor cast in the role would have to at least appear to be a skilled amateur videographer as well. Lofing explains, “We were looking for someone who could operate a camera, but who was also an energetic pe…

EVANGELINE LILLY IS HOPE VAN DYNE IN MARVEL'S “ANT-MAN”

Image
When Evangeline Lilly was first approached to lend her talents to the part of Hope van Dyne in Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” she admits that she needed to do some research to get up to speed on Marvel.

“I was not familiar with Marvel comics or Ant-Man when I was first approached about the part, so I had to do some homework,” says Lilly. “I watched some Marvel films because I was completely ignorant of the incredible things that they were doing. I discovered that they are very talented with story and character and they know how to put on a spectacle. Then, when I was doing screen tests, they started showing me pre vis material of Ant-Man and the ants in action. Once I saw it with my own eyes, I suddenly realized how cool this movie was going to be and that it’s going to be something that has not been seen at all in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s going to have its own life and its own fan base.”

Subsequently Lilly signed on and immediately started to talk to the writers about her character Hop…

AMANDA SEYFRIED, A TRIPPY, YOUNG ATTORNEY IN “TED 2”

Image
Amanda Seyfried (“Les Miserables,” “Mamma Mia”) has established herself as one of Hollywood’s most captivating young leading actresses. In Universal Pictures’ new provocative comedy “Ted 2,” she’s cast opposite Mark Wahlberg as Samantha L. Jackson—say that twice—an eager young attorney who takes on Ted’s legal case pro bono.

The actress shares: “I did A Million Ways to Die in the West with Seth, and he’s a loyal guy. When he likes somebody he brings them back; his life is his work. I was prodding him about it over the course of six months after we finished filming, and one day he called me. As a joke, I asked, ‘What am I playing in Ted 2?’ He called me months later and asked, ‘What are you doing in June?’ and offered me the role of the new love interest.”

Seyfried describes her character: “Samantha is fresh out of law school and is trying to find her footing in this firm. Her uncle hired her to come in as a junior attorney, and she works very hard. She’s sincere but likes the occasional…

KEVIN, STUART & BOB: GET TO KNOW THE ADORABLE “MINIONS”

Image
As the story of Universal Pictures' new adventure comedy “Minions” begins, the Minions are currently masterless in the frigid Antarctic, having grown despondent the more time they spend without a master to serve. Over the centuries, they have had such great intentions for their numerous bosses, but in true Minion fashion, they end up accidentally getting each and every one of their masters killed. When the Minions finally do meet Gru, they’re more relaxed and less insecure. In 1969, however, they’re still in the middle of a steep learning curve.

Although Kevin, Stuart and Bob are very much Minions at the core, it was crucial to provide differentiation not just to their look, but to their unique sounds. Producer Janet Healy says that it wasn’t until the Illumination team began developing “Minions” that they started discovering their distinct personalities. “It was hard at first because the Minions have always been a group that share characteristics of impatience and childishness and…

HANG WITH TERRRIFYING HORROR THRILLER “THE GALLOWS”

Image
In 1993, high school student Charlie Grimille died by the noose in a freak accident during Beatrice High’s production of the play “The Gallows.” Twenty years later, it seems Charlie will finally have his curtain call.

And his revenge.

On the eve of the play’s revival, students Reese, Pfeifer, Cassidy and Ryan spend the night trapped in the school’s auditorium, with no way to call for help. If Charlie has his way, it may be the last night they spend alive.

Written, directed and produced by Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff and shot entirely outside of the Hollywood system, the horror film “The Gallows” found its way to the big screen thanks to the filmmakers’ use of a much smaller one—the computer—and their own ingenuity.

Lofing states, “Travis came up with the initial concept, and we developed it from there until we had a rough script. Then we shot a promo trailer, mainly just so we could see how it worked, if it looked scary to us.”

“We also used it in order to raise funds, so we could shoot …

MICHAEL DOUGLAS IS HANK PYM IN MARVEL'S “ANT-MAN”

Image
Award-winning actor Michael Douglas has shown his versatility in a body of work spanning four decades but in Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” Douglas ventures into new territory when he steps into the role of the iconic Marvel character Hank Pym.

“It’s definitely a different role and also just a whole different experience,” comments Douglas. “I’ve never been in the Marvel world before; never been in any of this kind of green screen or special effects and never had to deal with the secrecy that exists in the Marvel world. This has been a whole new experience and I loved it.”

Douglas admits that he wasn’t a comic-book fan as a kid, but after he accepted the role, Marvel sent him hardcover books of Marvel comics and he developed an appreciation of both the art form and one of its master storytellers. As Douglas explains, “The books were beautiful presentations of all of Stan Lee’s work and since then I have become a tremendous fan. I am amazed at what he does. I maintain a fan Facebook page that I’ve h…

SETH MacFARLANE RETURNS TO DIRECT, VOICE FOR “TED” IN SEQUEL

Image
After “Ted’s” phenomenal success at the worldwide box office and in-home entertainment in 2012, it was natural that conversations among the filmmakers and Universal Pictures would turn to a sequel.

For writer-director Seth MacFarlane, however, it was a not given that another chapter would automatically move forward. He explains: “I actually hadn’t planned on making a “Ted 2,” but any time something does well, that always comes up. There’s no reason to do it if you’re going to repeat the same movie. It’s not satisfying for the audience, and it’s really boring for us.”

Still, MacFarlane admits that he has a great deal of fondness for the characters and the genre lends itself to limitless ideas: “It’s a little easier with a comedy, because comedy is generally character-based, as opposed to premise-based, and in a way you treat it like a TV series. You have these characters that can be put in any situation, and we felt that Ted and John could sustain a totally different story. They were ver…

SUPER-VILLAINS, BANK ROBBERS: WHO'S WHO IN “MINIONS”?

Image
When they accidentally lose yet another master, Kevin, Stuart and Bob lead the charge for their fellow Minions in search of the next master to serve, in Universal Pictures' new adventure comedy “Minions.” Their harrowing journey is far from easy, but the quest that is chronicled in the film will introduce us to everything we’ve ever wondered about them.

Kevin (Pierre Coffin) is the proud and protective “big brother” who knows that Minions without a master are Minions without a purpose. It’s Kevin who steps up and ventures out into the world with Stuart and Bob to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

Stuart (Pierre Coffin) is the “middle brother” of the Minions who feels hungry, mostly, and loves being a rebellious guitar player. Although the perennial adolescent has a short attention span and is a bit apathetic about the mission, he will certainly help Kevin and Bob find the biggest, baddest villain to serve.

Bob (Pierre Coffin) is the innocent and eager “little brother” …

“In real life, the dogs are on the front lines, making sure our troops don’t walk onto improvised explosive devices,” explains Amell. “And when handlers and dogs lose partners, they go through the same Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome, which is what the film explores.”

“`Max' is a very different project for me,” Amells adds, “I’m playing a Marine and shot scenes with 10 active duty military personnel. I have so much respect for our servicemen and women, just to work alongside them for a week was an incredible experience,” he shares.

It was a whirlwind for Amell switching between characters in two feature films in a short turnaround. “I wra…

SAM RAIMI AND GIL KENAN TEAM UP IN “POLTERGEIST” (3D)

Image
Writer, producer and director Sam Raimi may be best known for his work on the Tobey Maguire-starring “Spider-Man” trilogy, but he got his break in 1981 as the director and writer of the cult horror classic, “The Evil Dead.” So for Raimi, working as producer on the “Poltergeist” remake is something of a journey home, a much welcome return to his roots.

“I remember seeing it for the first time in a movie theater and it was a mind-blowing experience for me,” he says. “I was terrified, and yet at the same time, I so connected with the characters, and it was a very moving story. Together it was a very powerful combination, and even though I'd been a giant fan of great horror films, I'd never experienced characters before that I fell in love with and was so emotionally connected to in a horror film. It made the movie so terrifying.”

Even before “Poltergeist,” the young Raimi was obsessed with the horror genre; he was shooting “Evil Dead’s” precursor…

SAM ROCKWELL IN THE MIDST OF ANGRY SPIRITS IN “POLTERGEIST”

Image
Under extreme and extraordinary circumstances, Sam Rockwell stars along with Rosemarie DeWitt and Jared Harris in “Poltergeist,” a story of an ordinary family dealing with unexpected house guests in their newly bought home. Set in America’s nondescript suburbs, the young family-of-five move into a new home only to find it possessed by angry poltergeists. When these angry spirits abduct their youngest daughter, Madison, they recruit a team of scientists and psychics – including the clairvoyant reality star Carrigan Burke (Harris) - to get her back.
