“THE GOOD DINOSAUR” – A COMING-OF-AGE, “BOY” AND “DOG” STORY

Image
In a world where dinosaurs never became extinct and humans roam the wild, Disney-Pixar's “The Good Dinosaur” features a simple, relatable story in which an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend.

“It’s the story of a boy and his dog—only in our story, the boy is a dinosaur and the dog is a boy,” says director Peter Sohn.

“It’s also a coming-of-age story,” adds Sohn. “Arlo is afraid everything. But his father, Poppa, is always there for him, encouraging Arlo to step out of his comfort zone, to confront his fears, to make his mark.”

“Arlo is young and vulnerable,” says character art director Matt Nolte. “He’s so unsure of himself and we wanted to capture that in his look. He’s smaller and thinner than his siblings.”

“Poppa is powerful and capable,” adds Nolte. “He has perfect posture and he walks in a straight line—he knows where he’s going—whereas Arlo actually zigzags.”

His siblings, sister Libby and brother Buck, are bigger than Arlo from the very beginning. Work and ch…

MONICA BELLUCCI, LEA SEYDOUX: STRONG WOMEN OF “SPECTRE”

Image
James Bond, of course, is always drawn to women and Columbia Pictures' new 007 action adventure SPECTRE proves that he can still woo them. Italy's Monica Bellucci (“Malena,” “The Matrix” sequels) and France's Lea Seydoux (Cannes Palme d'Or winner “Blue is the Warmest Color”) play the new women in Bond's life.

In the film, a cryptic message from the past sends James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE.

Italian Monica Bellucci is an actress that producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli had tried to recruit in the past, denied only for scheduling conflicts. “We’re delighted to finally get her,” says Wilson. “She is terrific in the role.”

Bellucci, meanwhile, says that she was delighted to finally join the series. “…

“BOY NEXT DOOR” RYAN GUZMAN IN “JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS”

Image
Ryan Guzman, lead star of the hit thriller “The Boy Next Door” and TV's new toprater “Heroes Reborn,” lends a masculine presence to Universal Pictures' female-oriented musical-adventure “Jem and The Holograms.”

In the film, as Jerrica (Aubrey Peeples), a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar as her alter ego Jem, she and her band of sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden.

In Jerrica's musical journey, there is one person in her new Hollywood home that she’s slowly growing to trust. His name is Rio, and he is portrayed by Ryan Guzman. The music-intern son of Erica Raymond, founder and CEO of Starlight Music, Rio is tasked with helping Jem and the Holograms navigate through their newfound stardom. His job would be easier, however, if he wasn’t falling for one of its members...

Guzman discusses his role: “While Erica is all about making money, Rio is more about discovering …

REVIEW | Kapatiran (2015)

Image
A collection of beautifully shot shaky footage, Kapatiran comes off as a pseudo-film. An interesting montage of Pepe Diokno's seemingly accumulated videos with the theme of law, lawlessness and, of course, brotherhood (kapatiran).
It feels like he originally had ideas for a fraternity hazing story, and unable to finish it, he decided to throw in a bunch of his relevant (and not so relevant) personal videos into the mix, including the recent Iglesia Ni Cristo EDSA rally, for more of the "kapatiran" vibe. This is not your traditional narrative nor your experimental film. Although his raw shots evoke a sense of disgust, despair, curiosity, and even fear, Kapatiran is not really a film; it's just trying to come off as one.

REVIEW | Water Lemon (2015)

Image
Lem Lorca's poignant film centers on the Aspergian, self-titled hydrologist Filemon (Jun-Jun Quintana), who stresses over Mauban's water levels—and his frustration towards a community that is indifferent to his great environmental concern.
Filemon might be special (his dialogue like a Science jargon online-generator, or PAGASA updates), but he's no different from the folks of his small coastal town, who all suffer from a collective sense of despair and loneliness. Abandoned, trapped in a parochial life, gazing over the seawall and into the horizon, they wonder what lies for them beyond Mauban, beyond the passive waters of the bay. Their only portal to the outside world, their sanctuary, is the town's sole Internet rental shop.

We watch Filemon and his dynamics with the other small-town main characters: his loving but grieving mother, Pina (Tessie Tomas); the Electrochat Internet shop manager, Maritess (Alessandra de Rossi) and her Lolo Ume (Lou Veloso); his obsessive,…

Image
Kristen Stewart reunites with her “Adventureland” costar Jesse Eisenberg in Lionsgate's hip thriller “American Ultra.”

In the film, a stoner (Eisenberg) and his girlfriend’s (Stewart) sleepy, small-town existence is disrupted when his past comes back to haunt him in the form of a government operation set to wipe him out.

Stewart plays Phoebe Larson who appears to be as unmotivated as her slacker boyfriend but unlikely hero Mike. Like him, she seems in no hurry to go anywhere. But Phoebe is much more driven than she lets on. "She is way more together than he does," says director Nima Nourizadeh. "She's responsible, with more of a real job. Mike actually relies on her for a lot of the time. You soon understand that she pretty much takes care of everything for him."

Stewart and Eisenberg had instant chemistry, Nourizadeh says. "They hadn't seen each other in a couple of years, but the connection was instantaneous. When we started shooting, they were …

BE PART OF A HEARTFELT JOURNEY IN “THE GOOD DINOSAUR”

Image
Disney•Pixar’s "The Good Dinosaur" asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend.

“From the moment Arlo is born, he’s afraid of the world,” says director Peter Sohn. “He’s fun-loving and determined; he’s got a lot of fire when it comes to his desire to help his family. But he’s scared. His fear holds him back.

“From the beginning, Spot is the opposite of Arlo,” continues Sohn. “He’s tenacious, brave and an animal in every sense of the word. It’s the story of a boy and his dog—only in our story, the boy is a dinosaur and the dog is a boy.”

The film catapults Arlo into a vast wilderness that forces him to confront his fears. According to producer Denise Ream, the stunning and often overwhelming landscape that artists created ultimately play…

MYTH VS. REALITY: GET YOUR “BLACK MASS” FACTS STRAIGHT

Image
Myth and reality intersect in Warner Bros.' “Black Mass,” a compelling new big screen thriller that chronicles the rise and fall of one of the most dangerous gangsters in U.S. history. In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) convinced Irish-American mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to become an FBI informant in order to take out a common enemy: the Italian mob. Hatched in secret, this unholy alliance spiraled out of control, allowing the dangerous and unpredictable gangster to evade justice, expand his power, and become one of the most feared crime lords in Boston. Bulger’s riveting true life tale was adapted for the screen by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth, based on the 2012 best seller Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI, and a Devil’s Deal by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill – the two reporters who originally broke the story in the The Boston Globe. But the headlines didn’t end there. Rather than face a mounting list of criminal charges—including 2…

M, Q, MONEYPENNY GOT BOND'S BACK IN “SPECTRE”

Image
In Columbia Pictures' new 007 action adventure SPECTRE, trust and danger are “all in a day's work” for the trusted colleagues of James Bond in the MI6, namely M (Ralph Fiennes), Q (Ben Whishaw) and Moneypenny (Naomie Harris).

As 2012's Skyfall drew to a close, the filmmakers introduced the man who would take over the role of the iconic character M: actor Ralph Fiennes inheriting the part from Dame Judi Dench. “I’m very aware of the legacy,” says Fiennes. “I grew up with Bernard Lee’s M and then Judi Dench made such a fantastic impression. She brought a real toughness that I’m keen to carry on.”

Fiennes grew up an avid reader of Ian Fleming, John le Carré and Graham Greene and feels that the character of M is moulded by the image of the Cold War spy. “And though I know that’s not our era,” he says, “I feel this M is a child of that spy-slash-film world. Sam Mendes follows the demands of the Bond franchise but also allows us the opportunity to give more shade to our characters…

JESSE EISENBERG, THE STONE ASSASSIN IN “AMERICAN ULTRA”

Image
Oscar-nominated young actor Jesse Eisenberg, whose previous roles have included “Now You See Me,” “The Social Network,” and “Zombieland,” was the filmmakers' first choice to play the slacker-turned-superspy in the intriguing thriller “American Ultra.”

Watch the official trailer of “American Ultra”.

In the film, a stoner and his girlfriend’s sleepy, small-town existence is disrupted when his past comes back to haunt him in the form of a government operation set to wipe him out.

As action heroes go, Mike Howell (Eisenberg) is an unlikely contender. He is completely dependent on his girlfriend, unable to cook a simple meal without starting a fire. He has been hired and fired from the same rundown convenience store more times than he can remember, and he gets arrested for possession so often that the police are on a first-name basis with him.

"We knew it had to be Jesse," says producer David Alpert. "You just buy him as an innocent, small-town stoner. The action is complete…

“SPECTRE” – BIGGER, BOLDER THAN “SKYFALL”

Image
When approaching the 24th James Bond movie, SPECTRE, from Albert R. Broccoli’s EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment, the filmmakers were keen to ensure that the film followed on closely from its predecessor, the $1.1 billion global smash Skyfall. Daniel Craig, of course, is back for his fourth outing as 007, while the characters of Q (played by Ben Whishaw) and Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) both return after their reintroduction to the series in Skyfall. The new M (Ralph Fiennes) also returns.

The chance to explore all these characters’ stories was of vital importance to Sam Mendes, who is back for a second stint in the director’s chair. “It all starts from character with me,” begins the Academy Award®-winner, “and I wanted to explore all sorts of different aspects of the characters that I’d left behind in Skyfall. We had populated MI6 with a whole new generation of people — a new M, a new Moneypenny and a new Q. I wanted to let those relationships …

JOHNNY DEPP IS NOTORIOUS MOBSTER WHITEY BULGER IN “BLACK MASS”

Image
Three-time Oscar nominee Johnny Depp (“Sweeney Todd” “Finding Neverland,” the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films) stars as notorious mobster James “Whitey” Bulger in Warner Bros. Pictures' gangster thriller “Black Mass.”

For more than a decade—until his capture in 2011—Boston’s most infamous crime lord, James “Whitey” Bulger, was hunted by the FBI, surpassed only by Osama Bin Laden at the top of the Bureau’s Most Wanted List.

Directed by Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart”), “Black Mass” explores how a deal between ruthless gangster Whitey Bulger and FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel E -+erton) enabled Bulger to expand his criminal empire with complete impunity, as Connolly—blinded by his own ambition—shielded him from investigation, ignoring the rising body count.

Depp tells of his character, “Many people grew up kind of idolizing him; many wanted to be him because he did things his own way and, for the most part, he won. But he was also a very charismatic man. He had this draw that made people w…

JACK BLACK PLAYS FICTIONAL VERSION OF REAL-LIFE AUTHOR IN “GOOSEBUMPS”

Image
At the center of Columbia Pictures' new adventure comedy “Goosebumps” is top comic actor Jack Black (“Kung Fu Panda,” “King Kong”) in the role of R.L. Stine, real-life author of the hugely popular book series, Goosebumps.

The film brings the Goosebumps series to life on the big screen for the first time, combining dozens of author R.L. Stine’s famous creations into one hilariously spine-tingling movie.

(Watch two clips from “Goosebumps” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=744coPD55qo and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWEVqFJtrrU.)

Black says that he put in the work to make Stine a completely unique character. “When I read the script a few times, I felt like the character needed to look and sound different than me – it couldn’t be like the dude from `School of Rock' is now the writer R.L. Stine,” he says. “No, it needed to be a character that I haven’t played before, someone with a little more gravitas, a respected writer. So, I worked on his voice, and I decided to give him a l…
