JAMES WAN BEGINS SHOOTING HIGHLY ANTICIPATED “THE CONJURING 2”

Image
Burbank, CA, September 28, 2015 – Principal photography has begun in Los Angeles on New Line Cinema’s “The Conjuring 2,” with James Wan (“Fast & Furious 7”) once again at the helm, following the record-breaking success of “The Conjuring.” The supernatural thriller brings to the screen another real case from the files of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Reprising their roles, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga (“Up In the Air,” TV’s “Bates Motel”) and Patrick Wilson (the “Insidious” films), star as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who, in one of their most terrifying paranormal investigations, travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.

The film follows the phenomenal worldwide reception of Wan’s “The Conjuring,” which marked the largest opening ever for an original horror movie. The film went on to make more than $319 million worldwide and still remains the second highest grossing original horror movie of all time,…

REVIEW | The Martian (2015)

Image
After the The Counselor and Exodus: Gods and Kings, I almost gave up on Ridley Scott. Lo and behold, the greatest redemption in recent directorial history: The Martian.
First of all, one would hear the distinct buzzing of an Oscar nom for the effortless Matt Damon, whose Mark Watney, a.k.a., the titular Martian, gives a profound portrayal of a man left alone on another planet and using his sense of humor to keep his fear and trepidation at bay.
Math, science, teamwork, and sheer will to survive are the names of the game in this deeply moving and oftentimes funny NASA version of Robinson Crusoe. Drew Goddard (World War Z) wrote the screen adaptation of Andy Weir’s 2011 best-seller, and his script is more fun than intense, more human than science fiction.

Do not underestimate the comedic presence of Kristen Wiig and Jeff Daniels along with the serious Chiwetel Ejiofar, Sean Bean, and Jessica Chastain. It's surprisingly fitting. Chastain, as Commander Lewis, and Damon, are almost ty…

TEEN ACTRESS ODEYA RUSH TAKES ON GHOULS, ZOMBIES IN “GOOSEBUMPS”

Image
When Odeya Rush’s breakout movie “The Giver” opened last year, her brothers headed straight down to the cinema. They queued up and got their tickets and prepared for a night of fun. This might not sound all that surprising — until one considers the fact that they chose to watch “Let’s Be Cops,” a raucous comedy that opened against their sister’s movie. “My parents are supportive, of course, but my brothers like to make fun of me,” laughs the 18-year-old actress. “I make fun of them, too.”

When their sister’s next movie, Columbia Pictures' “Goosebumps” opens, however, her brothers will definitely be watching her on screen. Rush has six brothers, all of whom love the series of Goosebumps books by acclaimed children’s author R. L. Stine, and their sister is taking the lead female role in the movie adaptation, starring opposite Jack Black, Dylan Minnette and Ryan Lee. “They want to see the movie,” says Rush of her siblings.

Directed by Rob Letterman, “Goosebumps” casts Rush as Hannah, t…

NEW “CREED” POSTER HAS A FATHER-AND-SON VIBE

Image
Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures have just unwrapped the teaser one-sheet art for the upcoming action-drama “Creed.” Sporting a dominant father-and-son vibe, the new poster shows Sylvester Stallone (as Rocky) talking to Michael B. Jordan (as Adonish Johnson), as if saying the one-sheet’s slogan, “Your legacy is more than a name.”

“Creed” explores a new chapter in the “Rocky” story and stars Academy Award nominee Sylvester Stallone in his iconic role. The film also reunites director Ryan Coogler with his “Fruitvale Station” star Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed.

In the film, Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.

Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him …

EMMA WATSON REVEALS FAMILY’S CRIME IN PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER “REGRESSION”

Image
Emma Watson, best known for her role in the highly successful film franchise “Harry Potter” playing Hermione Granger expands her range as an actress as she stars her most challenging role to-date in the psychological thriller “Regression” along with Ethan Hawke and “Harry Potter” alumnus David Thewlis helmed by Academy Award Winner director Alejandro Amenábar (“The Sea Inside”).

Set in Minnesota circa 1990. Emma Watson’s character Angela Gray has found Angela has found peace and safety in religion after losing her mother in a car accident. During a seminar at Reverend Beaumont’s church she breaks down and confesses that her father has abused her. KEANU REEVES OPENS DOOR TO TEMPTATION IN “KNOCK KNOCK”

Image
Keanu Reeves stars in his latest sexy thrilling starrer in “Knock Knock” as a blissfully married man with two children who was lured by two very attractive women (played by Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas) when they came knocking at his door when he was left alone at home.

Directed and written by Eli Roth known for his critically acclaimed and phenomenal works in thriller and horror genre such as “Cabin Fever” that went on to be Lionsgate’s highest grossing film on the year that it was released and the worldwide hit “Hostel,” “Knock Knock” is an erotic thriller that toys on the idea of trouble coming into one’s own home and unleashes Pandora’s box.

“With Knock Knock, I wanted to show just how fragile the world we spend a lifetime building actually is. What if you did everything right – you went to a good school, you dated nice people until you met the right person, you settled down, you built a good life for yourself…and still, you have th…

BRADLEY COOPER PLAYS ROCKSTAR CHEF IN “BURNT”

Image
Four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper once again displays his acting chops in this year’s mouth-watering and delectable movie “Burnt” where he stars as Chef Adam Jones who was once a rock star chef, had it all yet lost it along the way. Awarded as a two-star Michelin talent with bad habits to match, the former enfant terrible of the Paris restaurant scene did everything different every time out, and only ever cared about the thrill of creating explosions of taste. To land his own kitchen and that third elusive Michelin star though, he’ll need the best of the best on his side, including the beautiful Helene (Sienna Miller).

In “Burnt,” a remarkably funny and emotional story about the love of food, the love between two people and the power of second chances, Jones moved to Paris at an early age of 16 and learned how to cook. His natural flair for cooking led his career on a sizzling journey but lost it all because of his inability to deal with fame and…

FIL-AM CINEMATOGRAPHER SHOOTS ACCLAIMED “STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON”

Image
Don't look now, but a Filipino-American contributed to the enormous critical and commercial success of Universal Pictures' “Straight Outta Compton,” which traces the rise of influential (and notorious) rap group N.W.A. The film's Director of Photography is none other than Oscar-nominated Fil-Am cinematographer Matthew Libatique, himself a life-long fan of hip-hop music.

Libatique describes to ICG (International Cinematographers Guild) Magazine, how he got involved with the film. “I was watching TV in a New York hotel room when I saw Ice Cube on Queen Latifah [the talk show], and she asked what he was doing next. When Cube said a film called `Straight Outta Compton,' I literally jumped up and grabbed the phone. For the first time in my career, I called my agent and said I really want that project.”

Fortunately for Libatique, he and “Compton” director, F. Gary Gray, shared the same agency. They met on Oscar day, 2014, to discuss the film, and eventually sealed the deal.

JOEL EDGERTON STRIKES A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL IN “BLACK MASS”

Image
Australian actor Joel Edgerton (“Exodus: Gods and Kings,” “The Great Gatsby”) plays an FBI agent who makes a pact with the devil, in Warner Bros. Pictures' new crime thriller, “Black Mass.”

Based on a true story, the film explores how a deal between ruthless gangster Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) and FBI Agent John Connolly (Edgerton) enabled Bulger to expand his criminal empire with complete impunity, as Connolly—blinded by his own ambition—shielded him from investigation, ignoring the rising body count.

“I think John saw Whitey as a kind of renegade who had this rock star glow about him in the community,” explains Edgerton. “To him, there was a deeper connection—he knew the rock star and that rock star had treated him well. Once. I believe he went into the FBI with good intentions and had aspirations of being a great lawman. But on his home turf there was a very blurry line between crime and the law, and if the person you admired was on the other side of the law, it could lead to ot…

MIA WASIKOWSKA, FROM “ALICE IN WONDERLAND” TO “CRIMSON PEAK”

Image
Universal Pictures' new gothic thriller “Crimson Peak” is confidently carried by the inquisitive naïveté of its protagonist Edith Cushing, played by Polish-Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, whose breakthrough role came in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

An aspiring author, Edith Cushing is haunted by the ghosts of her past and cursed by the visions of her future. Losing her mother to black cholera when she was only 10 had a profound effect on Edith’s upbringing. She matured to the task of taking care of her aging father, all the while seeking the liberties of forward-thinking women in late Victorian society. Haunted by the memory of a warning heeded by her mother’s ghost, Edith developed a fascination for the supernatural and was set on publishing a novel of gothic fiction when her own life became a case for the story.

Wasikowska was intrigued to work on another film with horror influences, admitting that she has been dismissive of the genre in the past. However working with di…

ACADEMY AWARD WINNER BENICIO DEL TORO IN GRIPPING ACTION THRILLER “SICARIO”

Image
Heinous crimes traverse the jagged line of the U.S. and Mexican border in an alarmingly escalating tempo that the intense thrilling action “Sicario” (meaning hitman) deals with, starring an impressive roster of actors including Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin.

At a time when the world is awash with the most pressing questions on drugs, terror, illegal immigration and corruption that has left people on both sides frightened and vigilant, “Sicario” explores the journey of an intelligence operation that pushes the rules to engage with those who don’t play by any.

“It’s a movie about choices,” adds Benicio Del Toro, who dives into one of his most conflicted roles as the equal parts vengeful and tender hit man Alejandro. “It’s tough to say whether any character in Sicario is truly good or bad. Do the means justify the ends? What happens when go into a situation where you want to kill one guy and you kill 20 innocent people? You…

The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.

REVIEW | The Intern (2015)

Image
Six years after the boring It's Complicated, Nancy Meyers returns to give us not a romantic comedy, but a sweet connection between Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway), a 30-something very hands-on owner of an online fashion business, and her 70-year-old intern, Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro). Ostin has her reservations about her too-observant intern, but circumstances bring the two together in an unlikely friendship.

The delight and humor of this feel-good movie is how an old gentleman makes his way through the hipster generation. The light, conventional story flows smoothly, with the occasional guffaw triggers. The story also refreshingly bolsters compassion and kindness and advocates acceptance of female power. Meyers both regards and affectionately mocks Millenials, with a somewhat sad reminiscing of the good ol' days.

Although The Intern is somewhat forgettable, it has enough substance and charm to be both enjoyable and tender.

“GOOSEBUMPS” STAR DYLAN MINNETTE A FAN OF HORROR BOOK SERIES

Image
For Dylan Minnette, landing a leading role in Columbia Pictures' “Goosebumps” movie was a dream come true. The 18-year-old actor grew up an avid reader of the Goosebumps books, written by best-selling children’s author R.L. Stine, and now features as the young male lead in the big-screen adaptation, starring opposite Jack Black.

“I loved them,” Minnette says of the books, which have achieved sales of more than 400 million, worldwide. “I feel like `Goosebumps' inspired me to read more because they were exhilarating and fun. Also, they introduced me to horror at a young age, which I'm a huge fan of now.”

The young actor, who says he’s read at least 30 different books from the hit series, is keen to point out that the movie adaptation is not a horror movie. It’s more an action-packed adventure that happens to feature a host of iconic monsters.

“The movie is funny,” he explains, “and it’s scary and exhilarating, and that’s what I liked as a kid. I feel like the books introduced m…

ICE CUBE'S SON PLAYS DAD IN “STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON”

Image
Casting for the key roles of a complex, emotional, real-life street drama like Universal Pictures' “Straight Outta Compton” was highly personal and took an immense effort by director F. Gary Gray. Of course, their goal when casting the five coveted roles was the full package of triple-threat performers—who could act, look the part and perform with an unfiltered intensity that channeled N.W.A. members Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, DJ Yella and MC Ren.

The role of Ice Cube were the first to be cast. As the early development stages of the project began to take shape, Ice Cube could easily envision his then-20-year-old son stepping into the on-screen role of Cube’s younger self. One look at O’Shea Jackson, Jr., and there’s no mistaking he is his father’s son. It’s not just the striking physical similarities between the two, but subtle nuances that genetics can’t deny—like a confident swagger that comes from a deep and strong sense of self.

Call it parental intuition, but Ice Cube knew his …

DAKOTA JOHNSON LEADS THE WOMEN OF “BLACK MASS”

Image
Though, in the context of the time, the FBI and the mob were each something of a boys’ club, there are women in the story Warner Bros. Pictures' new thriller “Black Mass” who have a distinct impact on what transpires. Portraying them are Dakota Johnson (“Fifty Shades of Grey”), Juno Temple (“Maleficent”) and Julianne Nicholson (“August: Osage County”).

“Black Mass” explores how a deal between ruthless gangster Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) and FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) enabled Bulger to expand his criminal empire with complete impunity, as Connolly—blinded by his own ambition—shielded him from investigation, ignoring the rising body count.

Dakota Johnson plays Lindsey Cyr, who had been Whitey’s longtime girlfriend and the mother of his only child. “Dakota has a sweetness and an earthiness about her that I wanted in Lindsey to counterbalance Whitey’s more taciturn nature,” says director Scott Cooper.

“Lindsey does bring out some level of humanity in Whitey, mainly through …

VISIONARY DIRECTOR TAKES YOU TO THE HAUNTED WORLD OF “CRIMSON PEAK”

Image
From the imagination of director Guillermo del Toro comes Universal Pictures' gothic romance “Crimson Peak” starring Mia Wasikowska (“Alice in Wonderland”), two-time Academy Award® nominee Jessica Chastain (“Interstellar”), Tom Hiddleston (“Thor” series) and Charlie Hunnam (“Pacific Rim”).

In the film, when her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind the place called Crimson Peak. Here, they will discover the power that love has to make monsters of us all.

ETHAN HAWKE UNCOVERS HIDEOUS FAMILY CRIME BASED ON TRUE EVENTS IN “REGRESSION”

Image
“Regression,” which means an act of going back, stars Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson at the backdrop of Minnesota, 1990. The film follows detective Bruce Kenner (Hawke) investigating the case of young Angela (Watson), who accuses her father, John Gray (David Dencik), of an unspeakable crime. When John unexpectedly and without recollection admits guilt, renowned psychologist Dr. Raines (David Thewlis) is brought in to help him relive his memories and what they discover unmasks a horrifying nationwide mystery.

Director Alejandro Amenábar returns to the big screen with “Regression,” which represents a return to suspense, the genre of his feature film debut in 1996 (“Thesis”). Inspired by a wave of events that occurred in the United States during the eighties, the film is both “a reflection on evil and an exploration of the shortcuts of the mind,” says producer Fernando Bovaira. The initial accusations that served as documentation for the writing of the screenplay arose within the context…
